3rd Update, Saturday AM: This can sometimes be an unpredictable weekend at the box office prior to Christmas, but when a studio has some form of solid goods, there are riches to be gained. Sony bravely went before Star Wars this year with its Jumanji sequel rather than follow like they did in 2017. And they’re off to a great start with Jumanji: The Next Level making $19.4M estimated Friday and $51.1M opening weekend. Global by Sunday is expected to reach $196M+.

yikes what the hell happened here?

The topic wasn't an easy sell and the movie didn't have the reviews/buzz necessary for it be a priority among the many movies aimed at adult audiences right now. Thus, you're not left with much of a crowd.

Thank goodness for IT and Joker cause it's been a really rough fall for WB with The Goldfinch, Motherless Brooklyn, Doctor Sleep, The Good Liar, and now this all playing to mostly empty auditoriums. At least Just Mercy should do decent when it goes wide in January.

This legged out well and seems to have broken even though.

10 prod budget, 17 dom, 10-15 os eventually. break-even depends on global marketing. when the prod budget is too low the marketing budget takes precedence in figuring out success i guess.

They advertised it as telling the real story when in fact it is a heavily fictionalized version of the story. The family of the dead reporter that Olivia Wilde plays has been speaking out about it slandering her.

Just 51.1 after 19.4 friday? How is this possible? Decline in Saturday? 13 mln in Sunday?

Deadline sucks at predicting OW after friday number. Will be closer to 55
