We at least have 3 early November examples,

Thor2 2.41x

Thor3 2.57x // broke sequelitis curse despite 50% bigger ow

DS1 2.735x // non-sequel. same ow as Thor2

Early doesn't really count. That's like 6 weeks before kids get out of school. And weeks before Thanksgiving. Bad release date.

Every time I head the word Dune, I envision some awful movie I saw on VHS during my childhood which had giant sand worms, and I can't imagine how that could possibly appeal to anyone as a Xmas movie...

But I haven't watched a trailer for it, if there is one, b/c I'm so turned off from the title...so who knows - maybe the book does contain a good movie (now don't tell me you all loved the old one and I need to give it a chance in my older years...I have so many other things still to watch:)...

The 1984 Dune movie was just bad. Did not capture the greatness of the book at all.

Dune (1984) was bad.

I would say comparison to Dune could be Valerian but instead of Planets there are royal families.

And they are fighting for Dune (a planet).

Dune is veey trippy. I read some chapters and unlike many othee books you have stretch your imagination a lot to understand it.

It's like you are walking into totally different and new world.

You can actually relate to Middle Earth in LoTR but to understand Dune takes a lot of time and patience.

Hysterical is losing money like Justice League or BVS. Big disappointment though.

The daily cdsacken BVS/Justice League comment lol

Definitely agree. BVS probably wouldn't be near the failure had it been released at Christmas.

BVS wasn’t a failure, didn’t lose money and didn’t “just break even”. So 3 incorrect statements from you. Deadline estimated at least $105m in profit.

22*4 looks more likely. January is pretty much dead for good family movies. (Dr. Do little is flop already)

In 2013 Hobbit had 15.6m FFS and made less than 30m after that. So 88m(4*22) for jumanji is in my opinion extremely unlikely. This 22m weekend is also an quite optimistic, Friday have same jump like frozen in 2013, frozen has insane run, can jumanji emulate this? in 2013 there was no movie in top 13 who had +35% increase on saturday.

Book is great. Movie is shit, Sy Fy mini series is shit. Shockingly, Sy Fy's Children of Dune (which is really Dune Messiah + Children of Dune) is excellent. if new Dune captures emotional resonance of Children mini, than it's going to be great.

frozen didn't have good/great fri/sat jumps during dec holidays has it was functioning at a higher level during weekdays. but i agree that 3-3.5x is more likely than 4x more for JTNL.

The sad part is 2019 box office is down from 2018.

2020 already looking to go down.

In 10 years many event movies will also start premiering in streaming services.

What about theatres and the employment they produce? Streaming services will never match the job rate of Theatres.

The next decade is very crucial for Theatres.

I kind of like the 1984 movie. It was definitely a big flop for its time. It reward in Christmas of that year and gots ass kicked by Beverly Hills  Cop. I remember reading about how in some theaters they had to give audiences little cards with information about the planets, characters and story so they could understand it better. Lol

I think its clear with all this Star Wars "failure" talk that we're using the word "failure" in a different way than, say, "flop". A movie can still profit at the BO and be deemed a "failure" in a relative sense. TROS will make a greater profit than BvS, yet it still "failed" to live up to the high expectations of the franchise (just as BvS failed to live up to the potential of its titular characters and the massive BO drawing power of the SH genre).

I do, however, think we need to distinguish movies like TROS and BvS from movies like Justice League, Solo or Transformers Last Knight. Those were flops, which goes beyond the definition of failure this board seems to use.

As a side note I think TROS is more analagous to Justice League than to BvS. The Last Jedi was Star Wars' BvS. It divided GA and fans alike. but it still made a lot of money off of the hype it had behind it. Just as Justice League paid for BvS's divisiveness, so too did TROS pay for the mistakes of TLJ

I’m looking forward to Dune but I can’t see how it can be successful at the box office thus allowing more of the series to be made. Am HBO series would have been a better fit for Dune

Well there is a HBO Max Dune spin-off series in development.

Well said.

Ironically, TROS has played more like Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, and Civil War. However, none of those 3 had a damaging effect on the franchise. They were, however, holdovers until the "big event" which was the Thanos war. TROS doesn't have that and there's nothing that the SW franchise is leading up to.
