2021 as on 04/11

  1. Shang Chi - $24M
  2. NTTD - $18M
  3. Free Guy - $14M
  4. BW - $13M
  5. Venom 2 - $12.5M
  6. F9 - $12M
  7. Dune - $11M
  8. Jungle Cruise - $11M
  9. Suicide Squad - $10M

SC 11% in Canada.

NTTD 13%
Dune 18%
TSS 18%

Last time I was saying 10% for NTTD, so it's not so so far. US only should be around $130M for NTTD and $125M-$130M for UK.

US > UK but it's tight.

Weekend 12-14 Nov

1. Eternals - 2.25 / 9.7

2. Dune - 1.3 / 15

3. Clifford - 0.9

4. NTTD - 0.73 / 20

Expected better for NTTD. Probably close to 30M, but seems like will end around 24-25M.

Dune doing great. Will most likely do 20M.

One thing I noticed regarding Quebec box office is that share of French language is reducing.

For instance

Titanic: $13.83mn in French and $4.37mn I assume English

Avatar: $10.85mn in French & $6.2mn English

SW:TFA: $7.64mn in French & $5.6mn English

Endgame: $5.1mn in French & $5.2mn English

The Avengers: $5.2mn in French & $3.1mn English

Infinity War: $3.84mn in French & $3.76mn English

What could be the reason?

Easy. Lots of younger people learning English. Note that before the 2000's, barely anyone spoke English in the general population. My city used to be 96% francophone (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec_City#Demographics) but according to latest census it's now 92%, but share of "bilingual" is increasing all the time, it's now at a third and probably higher since some people don't report it. They started teaching it in school at like 12 years old back then, it was so late. Just dumb. Then they brought it down to teaching it in like kindergarten so now almost all younger people are fine with English (some aren't... I know of 30 year olds who don't really understand English it's baffling. How do you even live on the Internet??!?!)

I am one of those people who learned and shifted their movie-going behavior. Before 2009 or so I couldn't catch a movie in theaters in English, I couldn't understand, so French it was. Then I started saying "fuck it" and went to see movies in English starting with Avatar even though I missed some parts... because fuck dubbing. Also great seats all the time.

The rest is history. My case is absolutely typical here. English showings are packed now, they weren't before.

It's also why the government is introducing laws to help retain French language. Youngsters are increasingly using English, businesses as well, and it could snowball really quickly

Yes visiting quebec city find younger people all know French but older people don't.

How leggy is Canada compared to the US? I'm sure it's leggier but I can't find OW numbers to compare the multis of movies in Canada compared to their southern neighbor.

Very interesting. But like you said, the Quebec government and quebecker nationalists are probably not liking this development as it signals the decloine of French amongst the province's youth.

Numbers are in USD and ranked as so. However it will be different in local currency. Broadly films from late 2000s and early 2010s are inflated in US$ due to ER. Some early 2000s films may be bit low in here as the tracked market might be a bit lower.

After looking at various sources, it seems like a lot (most?) of the numbers in this post are wrong. Maybe there was a confusion between US$ and C$?

For example, SW:TFA did not earn US$94.35m as is written here, but instead C$91,96m (which would be about US$65m based on the ER back then). Even the Quebec number seems off as Cinoch stopped tracking it at around C$14.9m (which doesn't match the $13.2m number here, whether in C$ or USD).

I have no guarantee for Quebec numbers but those Canada numbers are legit from the main box office measurement service, comScore.

Though at times I get doubts on whether they are simply adding Canada $ with US $ for North America total, but that won't make sense as you can notice how numbers in that list are benefited by better exchange rates in late 2000s and early 2010s.

Spider-man: No Way Home

Week 1 - $27.6M (Quebec missing since MON)

Week 2 - $9.7M

Week 3 - $5M (Ontario missing since WED)

Week 4 - $1.5M

Week 5 - $1M

Week 6 - $0.79M

7th Weekend - $0.51M

Total - $46.2M

Ontario reopen today. Will be interesting how it do. It has probably missed $5M in last 26 days. How much of that it will be able to recover, will see. Quebec reopen next week.

Underindexing performance in Canada. One would usually expect Canada to do $75-80M approx. with sort of numbers USA is doing. It has missed on $9M+ till date due to cinema closure in two states for a real value of $55M+, but that's not enough. Even with that it would be ending around $60M, roughly $15-20M short of what it should ideally be doing.

Canadians, from what I can tell, are likely far more COVID cautious as a whole than Americans. That should explain a decent amount of the missing money.

Canada weeK. 28 Jan - 03 Feb, 2022

  1. SM: NWH - $1.125M (+11%) / $46.8M
  2. Scream - $420K  / $1.45M
  3. Sing 2 - $238K

Ontario opened in the weekdays. Not as big as I initially thought it will be, but ok. $440k in ON during weekdays.

Expecting $1.1M overall weekend in Canada for SM.

Quebec opening from tomorrow. 2472 tickets sold in Cineplex 16 locs. Good. Could be more than Quebec may be.

Quebec could be more than Ontario. I think you wanted to say that

Ok I've seen your numbers been shared on Reddit (specifically, those showing TFA doing only $840m in the US) and after done fast research and I'm pretty much certain that your Canadian numbers (specifically the currency) are off. I'll repost my post from reddit (with relevant sources):

I think we've had this argument on BOT already, but I reiterate, your US numbers are off. You seem to have the Canadian and US dollar mixed up.

For example, TFA didn't do US$97m as your graph is implying (that would have been a ridiculous overperformance). It did C$91.9m(source).

I've cross-checked the source against one of the mainstream trades to verify its accuracy and it seems to hold up. This Hollywood Reporter article has it grossing C$58.1m in 2015 calendar year which when added to the C$33.8m 2016 calendar gross from above gives us the same total gross.

Using the exchange rate from that HR article, the US$ gross for the entire run of TFA in Canada would be $65m and so the US only number is US$872m. I assume you've made the same mistake for the Endgame and NWH (I haven't checked however).
