Some will find the real life wrongful incarceration drama Just Mercy a bit too safe and conventional, but it avoids preachiness and there's no denying that it packs a powerful punch where it matters. Making it even easier to overlook the potential "TV movie" nature of the material is the talented cast. Michael B. Jordan turns the good-hearted lawyer into a flesh and blood human being, but this movie belongs to Jamie Foxx, delivering a performance full of humanity that stands among his very best (if not his best). Brie Larson doesn't have much to do in a supporting role but her presence adds to the film. It might not be among the most original movies of 2019 but it's certainly timely and will stick with you long after it's over. B+

Destin Daniel Cretton is the type of director who can pull a lot of emotional weight from even the safest of concepts. Marvel is lucky to have a guy of such caliber signed on for a film.

The performances are top notch, though that's not really a surprise.

Can it get slow in places? Yes. Should you still watch it? Yes.

I gave it an A. It's impacted me positively. It has the message of being a vessel for goodness. Please go see it.
