They should just film Dolittle with every single successful actor as the title character and send the completed products to cinemas at the same time. Then we can find out who wins. He/she will be the ultimate Box Office Draw.

Do RDJ's fans even want to see him in this kind of role? Imagine Leonardo Dicaprio signing up for this. I don't think it would have done better than what it's doing now. Part of being a box office draw is also having the understanding/awareness of what films your core audience wants to see you in so you sign up for those kinds of movies.

Im just not sure that this kind of logic that applies to former eras really applies these days. Clearly what you are saying here is true for someone like Arnold in the 80s and 90s with the clear alternation between Action movies and family comedies, or Jim Carrey in his pomp (Although even in those instances we still got Last Action Hero and Cable Guy), but does it apply now?

Maybe a little bit to holdovers like Bullock, Cruise and Smith (though all of them have had failures in their supposed 'strength' categories somewhat recently in Extremely Loud, Mummy and Gemini Man).

As for Leo, it's a difficult one as one could easily argue that his reputation is built on reliably being in good movies as much as having an inbuilt fandom. The other thing is that while his box office has been reliably GOOD, it's not world-beating in terms of blockbusters: Since Titanic, only Inception has done x4 budget on theatrical release WW - though nearly all his films have done x3. This is not knocking him, it's an incredible run for someone who has eschewed IPs.  But it shows that if you want a x4 or better in the megabucks category, IP is the one and only chance and there isn't a single actor you can rely on.

While I personally have little interest in this franchise there's no doubt that this is a fantastic number and great news for variance in the market. Of course....it's still an established IP and it's using some nostalgia points, but there seems as though there's legitimate excitement for the film on its own terms. Great start to the year for Sony.
