Birds of Prey 113.4m OS 195.8m WW

Recommended Posts

BOP‘s numbers are not in line with expectations, but the Margot Robbie-starrer is performing best in the usual suspect markets for a DC pic. Friday’s openings included the UK at $1.2M from 1,211 screens which is on par with Lucy and 61% bigger than Terminator: Dark Fate. Mexico also bowed on Friday with $1.2M on 3,379 screens for 58% better than Dark Fate and 59% over Mad Max: Fury Road. Spain came in even with Fury Road at $370K from 505. All of the Friday launches were No. 1s.

After two days of play, Russia is leading all markets at $1.6M, followed by Brazil and France(3 days) at $1.1M each, Australia with $991K, Korea (3 days) at $977K, Germany with $734K and Italy at $396K.

In Asia, the box office is being impacted by the coronavirus and though BOP is not pulling its potential there, the available audience is giving it solid market share.

We’ll be back on Sunday with a full weekend update.

The movie's performance is so bad that they're comparing it to Dark Fate ( which isn't even a comicbook movie to begin with ), lol.

I was more surprised by the lucy comparison. At least Dark Fate came out only a few months ago

To clarify that last statement, it seems everyone is using the cali tax credit webpage to figure BOP's budget. On that site, BOP has a budget of 84.5m after its tax break. However, that is NOT the budget number. On that same page, Captain Marvel's budget is listed at 118m net. The figures do not take into account post-production. While yes, Captain Marvel had higher post-production costs, BOP DID NOT have 0 post-production costs. Most likely post was about 1/3 of that of Cap M, which still gets BOP to 100m budget (Deadline cited 84.5m but noted many industry sources said BOP's budget was much higher, that's because it was). Still, if BOP can get to 250m, I think itll minimize losses

I think those figure do not take into account outside California production cost, prost production made in CA should appear (many of them are even eligible for tax credit)

http://film.ca.gov/wp-content/uploads/Chart-of-Accounts-Non-Indies-IZ-10-08-19.pdf

And a lot of SFX house used are set in California (like Luma picture, Crafty Apes) for this.

Now I think you could be right that Weta spending in New Zealand post production is not necessarily there, and obviously reshoot could have ended up higher than what was planned in November 2018 when talking an early 2020 release. Because the Louisiana tax credit info have a total expenditure and a total Louisiana expenditure line while California only tell us the California spending it seem.

Also we do not know the tax credits of those others jurisdictions, SFX tend to be subsidized in a lot of place.

$100M net budget would not be special for this for sure.

The Lucy comp took me out like it’s so random and so out of the blue

They would probably take Dark Fate 200m intl bo in a heart beat, but Dark Fate was quite Asia heavy, top 3 intl market were:

China: 50.6M

Japan: 21M

South Korea: 17M

It is being compare to a movie that made 100M outside those 3 market that should be really low to nil for this one, making the comparable how to apply and not that relevant.

The fact that Russia is leading all markets even though it's the lowest opening for a DCEU movie there (as far as I know) is really telling

Terminated.

Huh? What makes you think $200m is dead? Opening could be $80m.

Harley's fanbase skews young and female. It's an odd decision by DC/WB to have this film be R rated for no good reason. Anyways, I'll probably be seeing the film on Tuesday, see also how much interest there is amongst the general populace after the weekend.

81.3M global is shockingly bad opening for a movie that opened in 78 countries + USA.

What a massive disaster. And it has no market left except Japan.

Dark Phoenix is vindicated. Dark fate, CA, BoP all did worse.

Dark Phoenix is 1000x time worse than CA and BoP combined. Hell, even Dark Fate was a decent movie that didn't do further brand damage.

Dark Phoenix about $88M WW opening if we don't count CHN & Japan

So kind of never had that opening then lol. It also cost more than 3 times what Birds of Prey did.

None of those films are losing as much money as Dark Phoenix did 😂😂
