Coronavirus | COVID-19 | Global Pandemic | PLEASE KEEP DISCUSSION TO THIS THREAD

Interesting interview (in German) with a lung specialist:

https://www.tt.com/artikel/30728235/tiroler-lungenspezialist-im-tt-studio-leben-verlaengern-um-jeden-preis

he's talking about what it means to be on a ventilator for as long as Covid19-victims have to ... more than 50% ventilated die still in ICU, and of those surviving but intubated for >2 weeks, most will have a heavily damaged lung. Experience shows that there's a high probability (the older the higher) the survivors will die later on within a year.

He's suggesting that, especially for Covid-victims in retirement homes, a choice should be offered - ICU or palliative medicine (mostly morphines to have a peacuful death), so doctors won't be forced to apply triage as happens in overrun places.

He's suggesting to concentrate future efforts on those retirement homes - keeping them virus-free - but to keep schools open so herd immunity will be built up among the younger generation. (More or less the Swedish way).

He's admitting that he may be in error, too, and it will be only in hindsight that we will be able to determine which measures made sense and which were evershooting. But at the end of the interview he's repeating that, despite our efforts, we may be saving less lives than we imagine at the moment, just distributing the deaths over a longer period of time.

I thought this was an interesting (and hopeful) look at how Kerala is fighting the virus. @grim22 @charlie Jatinder @ZeeSoh @Madhuvan I’d love to get your thoughts on it.

Kerala is the best Indian state when it comes to any living standards. It is also the state with lowest BJP (India's ruling party) reach. Of course they will be the first to handle the crisis with almost no help from federal government.

While Kerala is part of India, it doesn't behave like rest of India.

In Kerala government cares and people support them. This strategy will fail in most places in India. People are literally beating cops and healthcare workers. They are spitting on them, escaping from quarantine and what not.

I was going to make a quip about it sounding a little like the West Coast of the US, but then I checked a map and saw Kerala is literally on the west coast of India. So maybe a tiny bit more appropriate than I first thought.

Basically it’s saying walk up and down on the same side of the stairs.

Media needs to stop within the "Gotcha" questions and get with the program.

Public are not stupid they see what they are doing.

South West like California but then the actual West Cost i.e. Gujarat is a BJP hub and other West states Maharastra and Karnataka also mandated BJP win.

Spain - Monday

169,496 positive cases (+3,477 relative to Sunday) +2.09%

17,489 deaths (+517) +3.05%

64,727 healed (+2,336) +3.74%

87,280 active cases (+624) +0.72%

Data are still not too accurate since we come from a long weekend (Thursday was holiday in some regions and Friday was national holiday. Even today is holiday in the regions where it was not holiday on Thursday). Tomorrow and mainly on Wednesday we will know more accurate data.

Said this, active cases continue rising with low numbers. I hope it can start to drop eventually.

Today, after a 2 weeks period of hibernation, some workers are coming back to their jobs (building, some industry). It is estimated that about 1 million people are affected. We will see along upcoming weeks if it is a good decision or not. There is debate about this.

Spain - Tuesday

172,541 positive cases (+3,045 relative to Monday) +1.80%

18,056 deaths (+567) +3.24%

67,504 healed (+2,777) +4.29%

86,981 active cases (-299) -0.34%

Being cautious since yesterday it was still holiday in some regions and these numbers could still be underreported, but this is the first day that number of active cases drops relative to previous day.

Kerala is a state with educated people though...

What you have in other parts?

- Islamic Sect meeting in Delhi and causing thousands of cases refusing to quarantine?

- People Beating Up Doctors and nurses?

- A  SIkh man running a police blockade and cutting a police officers hand with a sword.

Also Congress can win all the seats in Kerala it wants, but that is not how you control India. Reality is Congress has no leader that anyone likes and Modi while being unpopular with the twitter crowd is still quite popular in the parts of India that have tons of seats.

So Modi acts like Trump but his grip on power is way stronger.

Actually Punjab is also praised for its control though nothing revolutionary but people are majority following lockdown.

Since we are agriculture state, there is no shortage of food and almost everything is smooth. That one incident is no way to generalise things.

Others have already pointed out but Kerala is perhaps the best state in India. It comes out at the top or near the top in nearly every good statistic for the country. It’s closer to some of the better developing countries out there whereas other states in India like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are more closer to sub Saharan Africa levels or worse.

Kerala also has a more educated populace and a state government not as corrupt as those in others. All this has helped them control the spread despite being the first state in India where Coronavirus showed up (due to workers returning from other countries. Kerala has a high number of its people working overseas).

Nope they are not real. Numbers are low because not enough tests are being done. We have one of the lowest number of test conducted per million people in the world. Its abysmally low.

I’m sure the death count is also higher as not everyone dying of similar symptoms is getting tested either.

Although I think our very young population and strict lockdown has helped greatly reduce the infected numbers

Well according to many users here looking at the root cause of a virus is racist so you think China are going to change their ways?

Like Wet Markets in China are a threat to humanity, its simple as that...
