This is a really good 7 min video following doctors in a Houston hospital treating COVID patients.

Includes interviews with the one nurse who has gotten sick and a couple who got sick and have no clue how as they said they took all the precautions.

Also talks to a bar owner who went down with it.

https://www.cnn.com/videos/health/2020/06/29/inside-houston-coronavirus-hospital-marquez-newday-vpx.cnn/video/playlists/coronavirus/

Lead doctor says they are about 80% full now in the hospital and given how long patients with COVID stay in the hospital they will likely be 100% full within 2 weeks if things don't improve.

This may be a good one for Jason to opine on if he can read it (may be behind a paywall).

Talks about research going on now trying to figure the dominant variant that is currently in the US - the G variant (glycine). Basically started in Europe and came through NY and according to this article is now responsible for over 95% of all cases in the US.

They are still doing research but it appears to be much more contagious, though not more deadly, than the original D (aspartic acid) variant that originated in China.

The way the article describes COVID is like a destructive burglar, and the G variant appears to be a much more efficient lock picker.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/science/2020/06/29/coronavirus-mutation-science/?arc404=true

At least four laboratory experiments suggest that the mutation makes the virus more infectious, although none of that work has been peer-reviewed. Another unpublished study led by scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory asserts that patients with the G variant actually have more virus in their bodies, making them more likely to spread it to others.

But there may be other explanations for the G variant’s dominance: biases in where genetic data are being collected, quirks of timing that gave the mutated virus an early foothold in susceptible populations.

“The bottom line is, we haven’t seen anything definitive yet,” said Jeremy Luban, a virologist at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

One of the things scientests were always worried about was that Covid 19 would mutate into a more agressive and/or tougher strand.

Jacksonville, FL is going to implement a mandatory indoor mask wearing ordinance. Apparently it came about because the Coast Guard and Navy (that have large presences there) have already implemented one. (Also trying to make sure they can go with the Republican Convention)

Waiting for Donnie's reaction....

Los Angeles County is closing the beaches for July 4th wekeend.

Also, Jacksonville is instituting the mask ordinance, but unlike most of the Southern parts of FL, is not closing its beaches July 4th weekend.

Jacksonville has been less hard hit then either Miami or Orlando, or even Tampa, but it feels like having your beaches open when most others are closed are just going to bring a ton of people to them and set you up to have an outbreak at the end of July/early August.

EU to allow 14 countries in

On the current "safe" list, still likely to be amended, are Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia and Uruguay.

UK nationals are still to be treated in the same way as EU citizens until the end of the Brexit transition period on 31 December. Therefore, during that time UK nationals and their family members are exempt from the temporary travel restriction.

The UK is currently negotiating "air bridges" with several EU member states, so that coronavirus does not totally block summer holidays - the busiest season in Europe for tourism, which employs millions of people.

The EU is ready to add China if the Chinese government offers a reciprocal deal for EU travellers, diplomats say.

And the virus does not give damn about legal judisdictions....

Local efforts alone can only do so much.

I am now convinced that you are going to start to see states and cities start to restrict entry from states and cities with a high level of Covid infections. This is not quite the same as quarantine, and will create huge legal problems under the full faith and credit clause of the COnstitution, which governs relations between the states.

Queensland is opening the state border for everyone except Victorians.

Meanwhile in Victoria 300,000 people in 10 postcodes are going back into lockdown for 30 days to deal with the outbreak. The government also confirmed today the outbreak is primarily due to poorly managed Hotel Quarantine in Melbourne.

Victoria just left Hotel Quarantine to security guards whereas in NSW and the other states it was primarily the police and army. For the next 2 weeks international flights will all be diverted from Melbourne to Sydney. Genomic sequencing has traced most of the cases back to hotel security guards.

This is going to be one more problem we will have in the US if we actually get things under control.

The tracers in NY have mentioned difficulty getting people to give them information about their contacts and activities. That is in one of the most liberal places in the country. If they are getting pushback in NY, imagine what it will be like in some other states.

Contact tracing may be literally impossible in the US.

well it's not literally impossible. people are just idiots.

Its a dual problem of Americans natural distrust of government and incompetent leadership from politicians around Corona.

https://news.ki.se/immunity-to-covid-19-is-probably-higher-than-tests-have-shown

Quote

T-cell immunity in asymptomatic individuals

Consultant Soo Aleman and her colleagues at Karolinska University Hospital’s infection clinic have monitored and tested patients and their families since the disease period.

“One interesting observation was that it wasn’t just individuals with verified COVID-19 who showed T-cell immunity but also many of their exposed asymptomatic family members,” says Soo Aleman. “Moreover, roughly 30 per cent of the blood donors who’d given blood in May 2020 had COVID-19-specific T cells, a figure that’s much higher than previous antibody tests have shown.”

The T-cell response was consistent with measurements taken after vaccination with approved vaccines for other viruses. Patients with severe COVID-19 often developed a strong T-cell response and an antibody response; in those with milder symptoms it was not always possible to detect an antibody response, but despite this many still showed a marked T-cell response.

Got to agree on this one. The stories of tracers not being able to get contacts started in NYC and that is about as liberal as it gets in the US.

It's more an ingrained belief in not trusting government with any of your information.

FWIW, someone either data dumped or changed reporting (probable deaths) as the CNN graphic for deaths in the US went up 4,000 this morning.
