The head of the NEA (National Educators Association) was on TV this morning.

She mentioned that one thing you never heard out of President Trump's mouth yesterday was opening the schools 'safely'.

Basically no guidance is being given, no money is being given (which is a big deal as local tax revenue has been hugely negatively impacted and alot of money is going to be needed to pay for trying to open schools safely - cleaning, PPE, extra buses, extra nurses, etc).

Real bad day all around.  The hope that yesterday was just a big catch up from the holiday weekend is dashed.  Tomorrow is going to brutal.

We fucking suck so bad in the USA.  2 months of SAH wasted because people decided it was over and just can't take even the simple precautions.

This beats the world o meter single day state record, but because of the different cutoffs today was only in the 8000s for Cali on world o meters and NY holds on to the record for now.

Single country daily record whichever way ya slice it though.

Garcetti’s muttering about another shelter-at-home order. tbh I’m surprised it’s taken this long — and I wouldn’t be surprised if Newsom orders one for several counties (at minimum).

Remember when in the movies the CDC expert was the one guy who knew what was going on?

Everyone in the 9 public housing towers in Melbourne I mentioned previously have now been tested.

Al Taqwa College cluster is now the largest with at least 113 cases.

GOP re-election strategy: They can't vote us out if the voters are all dead.

That you are beginning too see some cracks in the GOP wall is telling. Oh, Trump will still have his cult members, but he can't win with them alone.

It's pretty bad in the US at the moment, because of terrible political leadership...

But cheer up, it could be legitimately worse.

But let's reopen the schools next month anyway!

DeShitis is an embarrassment to this state.

The Mayor in Jaws was an amateur in causing death compared to DeSantis.

The guy has his nose so far up Trump's ass it's pitiful.

The intensive care unit at the main hospital in Bergamo, the Italian province worst affected by coronavirus, is Covid-free for the first time since the outbreak of the pandemic in Italy in February.

Quote

The virus was first detected in the province on 23 February, two days after Italy’s first local transmission was confirmed, and went on to kill an estimated 6,000 people.

“Victory has come,” said Luca Lorini, the director of the emergency unit at the hospital, where staff on Monday gave a “liberating” applause and dedicated a minute of silence to those who died. At the height of the emergency, the intensive care unit at Papa Giovanni XXII hospital treated up to 100 patients.

Maria Beatrice Stasi, the hospital’s general manager, told La Stampa: “Today we see our staff finally dressed in their normal uniforms.”

I included all of the tweets in the chain as they give a good nuanced look at things.  The article itself is a fantastic and detailed look at probable causes for all that is happening and well worth everyone's read, IMO.

for the 'but the deaths are declining' crowd.

The last 3 days the 7 day avg deaths has gone up by 103 from 478 to 581. Now the first one was catch up from the holiday weekend (the 7 day avg had been between 526-530 from Tue-Fri last week and the Tuesday increase brought it to 525). But yesterday brought it to 553 and today to 581.

From one week ago deaths are now up 9.6%. Hopefully the upward trend slows down pretty quickly.

The last 3 days have been the highest 3 day death toll since Jun 2-4.

It's also worth pointing out the whole 'but the death rate is falling' argument as well. That is true, but if cases increase fast enough then that drop in death rate is more than offset by increased deaths due to increased cases. That is what we are starting to see now. If you say that the mortality rate has decreased from say 0.5% to 0.3%. Than any increase in cases greater than 67% will cause the # deaths to increase.

The number of people in intensive care units fell by 16 to 496, the first time the count has fallen to fewer than 500 since mid-March.
