Weekend Thread (14 Feb - 17 Feb) - Sonic 58M/70M

Go Sonic.   Video Game Movies have had a rocky history at the box office but I always felt that was Hollywood fault.  They do not adapt the games right.  Video games do have some amazing characters and storylines.  I'll never forget in 93 when we saw "Mario Bros" and was like "That looks nothing like that game we love" which is why it bombed.   Same with "Street Fighter" where they made Van Damme the main character when in the game it was Ryu and Ken.   Two properties that I think have movie potential are "Metal Gear" because in the 80's on Nintendo, Michael Biehn was on the cover and we all though there would be a movie.   The Military aspect is perfect for a blockbuster.  And Nintendo's "Legend of Zelda" because after "Lord of the Rings"  or even "Willow" I think that world can translate to film.   So after Pika Pika and now Sonic I think more video movies can be greenlit in the future.  But good for Sonic, can't wait to check it out.

The cover illustration depicts the protagonist Solid Snake prominently, with the eponymous mecha below him. The illustration is in fact a reproduction of a picture of the character Kyle Reese from the 1984 film The Terminator, played by actor Michael Biehn.

(This cover was based on Kyle Reese Character in Terminator)

BOP could close in at 100 mill final with that 2nd weekend. Its no way a flop. Just a underperformer with wasted potential. It will make money

It will drop harder next weekend. It’s doing shit business overseas. Likely going to lose money theatrically

Speaking of video game movies, I’m very much looking forward to the box office possibilities of Universal and Illumination’s Super Mario movie.

A lot of people criticize them for the stupidity and lack of plot for the Despicable Me/Minions movies but outside of some games like Paper Mario, the Mario franchise is not known for its narrative. If Detective Pikachu and Sonic are the Blade and Bryan Singer’s X-Men, I truly believe that Mario will be the Sam Raimi Spider-Man and finally the floodgates or video game movies will be opened wide and we’ll see an onslaught of adaptations in the coming years.

According to Mendelsohn (he's given correct estimates before), it's at 120 mil WW right now. Should cross 150 mil by the weekend. I doubt it's missing 200 mil. Still probably a money loser but won't lose tens of millions like people here expect.

If that was true then Cats shouldn’t have bombed...

Cats was a creation made by clueless executives trying to appeal to furries, without actually knowing what they like or are into. It's basically the Crash of the furry community (before you ask, Zootopia was basically Black Panther before Black Panther. The movie even has a black panther in it!)

Um, I dont know what world you're living in but normally a tentpole's TV and streaming chances are damaged if the film doesnt make $100M+ domestically. BoP's break even is $235M including possible international tv deals, and it's not making that much.

"wat" at that Sonic number. I have been a little bit out of the loop and all but I  haven't heard anything about this movie since the whole design fiasco. Isn't that putting it on pace for a 60m three day??

Marketplace was starved for a major family movie. Helped that everything aimed at that audience since Frozen II (Spies in Disguise, Dolittle) pretty much sputtered.
