Best Picture Predictions - 2020

my early feeling is that in the heights will be a bigger contender than west side story. WSS will be knocked for being pointless and dated and will be unfavourably compared to Heights. people forget about the story of spielberg going to Puerto Rico for advice on how to do it respectfully and their advice was "don't make this fucking movie" lol. although maybe it'll play like green book and "pointless and dated" will be it's strength.

sources tell me to expect not just eligibility changes (especially in light of all the ways movies are currently debuting directly on VOD and streaming platforms such as Netflix) but also likely some surprising and significant changes regarding categories themselves. What these changes will be are anyone’s guess

Likely changes in the way voting for each category works. I really don't see them adding new categories or anything.

what about changing some of the above the line categories to preferential ballot voting and increase nominations to 8-10 instead of 5 like best picture 🤔

we could see less upsets in the acting and directing categories that way

Increasing the number of Best Picture nominees is fine since it allows some movies to get nominated that wouldn't have otherwise (cool nominees in recent years like Black Panther would've missed if it were still 5) but I don't see the need for the other categories to expand. A big part of the fun on nomination morning is seeing who gets snubbed or who shows up as a surprise nominee, you don't have that same kind of chatter when you expand the categories.

Would be weird to expand the acting categories now  when a lot of the awards bait has been pushed to next year. Maybe having an equal number of Directing and Picture nominees will solve the category's issue with "snubs" in recent years.

They have been talking about combining the Sound categories for a while. Wouldn't it be nice if Stunt and Casting categories got added? You have some people pushing for genderless acting categories, but it would surprise me if AMPAS is ready for that degree of change just yet.

I have been listening to a lot of Oscar podcasts about the earliest years recently, and it just reminds you that the categories/number of nominees aren't at all static.

SAG will probably have to try genderless categories at their own awards show before the Oscars (and the Emmys, for that matter) take the plunge with how much power that branch has overall (wouldn't be a surprise if they have the most out of any individual group tbh), and that's unlikely to happen in the near future. The Sound categories being combined makes the most sense. Stunt category would be nice.

Or maybe...time to test out the Popular Oscar category. :Venom:

Combing Sound makes sense. I also wouldn't be surprised if they combined screenplay, and then add two new categories. Maybe they will add a comedy/musical category. Stuntwork also makes sense. Perhaps Best Ensemble as well???

Joker would've won the popular category if it existed this year, black panther would have too the year before that.

it would be a category populated by comic book movies   :bravo:

here's what really would've happened: BoRap would've won in 2018 and then they'd immediately cancel the category because the entire point of its creation was to give black panther an award.

They wouldn't split the Best Picture category up into two genres or combine the Screenplay categories cause the Globes (the second biggest awards show of all) already do that. Ensemble is nice but that's what the SAG Awards are for. Not sure what else they could add that isn't already covered other than just eliminating certain categories, especially with the criticism of how bloated the show has become over the years but that's been on the producers of the ceremonies and not the AMPAS.

they're also combining the Sound categories

The Academy also announced that it will eliminate an Oscar category. The sound mixing and sound editing categories will be combined into one award, reducing the total number of trophies awarded to 25. This change was initiated by the sound branch.

So basically movies like The Lovebirds and Trolls and SCOOB! and The King of Staten Island which were all gonna be theatrical releases but won't be now will be eligible but stuff that was always designed for streaming only like the To All the Boys I've Loved Before sequel won't be. Was pretty easy move to see coming, although most of the actual contenders aren't supposed to be arriving until later in the year anyway (though the fall festival landscape is gonna be seeing changes too).

  • As part of the Academy’s sustainability effort, the 93rd Awards season will be the final year DVD screeners will be allowed to be distributed; these mailings will be discontinued starting in 2021 for the 94th Academy Awards.  Access to the Academy Screening Room will continue to be made available for all eligible releases.  The distribution of physical music CDs, screenplays and hardcopy mailings, including but not limited to paper invites and screening schedules, will also be discontinued next year.  Digital links to materials will be permitted.

rip those screener leaks we used to get so often..

When theaters re-open, the Academy also will expand the number of qualifying theaters beyond Los Angeles County to include venues in New York City City of New York, the Bay Area, Chicago, Miami and Atlanta, Georgia.

Pretty cool to see Miami listed among these even though the entire area is one of the places where specialty/Oscar fare usually expands to first.
