No more Ryan Murphy. The world has progressed past the need for Ryan Murphy.

Luckily he's only producing one and producing/directing the other. It's clear after Hollywood that he needs to stay in those capacities only and leave the writing to someone else like both seasons of American Crime Story.

Netflix also has a whole bunch of other promising-sounding movies (The Devil All the Time, I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Rebecca) which are all supposed to come out this year (Netflix said the other week that their movie schedule has been unaffected by the pandemic and that everything will release on time) but none of them sound like they'll go anywhere with awards. Netflix: the true saviors of the movie year 2020!

I’m Thinking of Ending Things is probably one of their strongest contenders given it’s Kaufman

True but the previous movies he's directed (in addition to writing) haven't had the best of luck with awards groups (although Anomalisa did get Animated Feature nominations at the Oscars and the Globes) so I'm more on the apprehensive side there.

Quote

While the Television Academy today recognized AMPAS recent ruling to consider streaming and VOD fare during the pandemic crisis, the Emmy voting organization re-emphasized a new rule made back in March that Oscar-nominated programs would no longer be eligible in the TV competition. In fact, the new rule which prevents content from competing both at the Emmys and the Oscars is fresh news to many.

Looks like Blonde is going to 2021.

Quote

The jury is out on whether any of these films will be completed for a 2020 release given production shutdowns. The same goes for George Clooney’s sci-fi thriller “The Midnight Sky,” which wrapped production in February. Sources close to Netflix say Andrew Dominik’s “Blonde,” starring Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, is intended for 2021.

mid-may predictions, in an ideal world we would be having Cannes right now and the Cannes label would give a much-needed boost & recognition to some non-english films that may or may not make it to the Oscars, alas we'd have to wait until Venice to see for that (if Venice actually happens).

Mank (Netflix)

Trial of the Chicago 7 (Paramount)

Da 5 Bloods (Netflix)

The French Dispatch (Disney)

Tenet (WB)

Next Goal Wins (Disney)

News of the World (Universal)

Ammonite (NEON)

West Side Story (Disney)

In the Rocks (A24/Apple) OR Minari (A24) I think at least one A24 film will make it this year so it'll probably be one of those two.

films I think will get at least one Oscar nomination but miss on best picture:

Hillbilly Elegy (acting & Screenplay)

Annette (acting or Song)

Dune (Sound, VFX, Costumes,Photography and at best director)
No Time To Die (Sound & Song)
Nomadland (acting)
The Father (acting)

Soul (Animation & Screenplay)
Onward (Animation)

I'm Thinking of Ending Things (Screenplay)
A Quiet Place II (Sound)

in 1975 James Whitmore got a best actor nomination for Give 'em Hell Harry which was a a filmed play that was given a theatrical release. this is the precedent for the Hamilton thing on Disney+ being an awards contender. originally planned as a theatrical release so it would count under their streaming rules. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT. at least a golden globe nomination maybe.

It has to have been planned for a theatrical release within the window of time specified by the Academy and the Globes, starting March 15 till a time to be determined. Seeing that Hamilton's theatrical was planned for October of next year, it is doubtful it will be considered.

well hold on let's just see how far this pandemic lasts.

btw looked thru the rules on the oscar website and specifically what you say isn't stated. it's vaguer than that so there's wiggle room. nothing about the film HAD to be scheduled for when the cinemas were closed just that it needed to initially be a planned theatrical release and it'll be released online/VOD before the theaters are open again. with the amount of stuff not coming out this year I don't think they'll go hard on anything mildly fudging the rules.

The Globes mentioned it

“In light of the closure of all theatres in the Los Angeles area, this requirement is temporarily suspended as follows:  Motion pictures that had a bona fide theatrical release planned to begin in Los Angeles during the period from March 15 until a date to be determined by HFPA when cinemas in the Los Angeles area have generally reopened, may instead be released first on a television format (e.g. subscription streaming service, subscription cable channel, broadcast television, etc.) and will still be eligible for the Golden Globe motion picture awards.  (Motion pictures also may continue to be released on pay-per-view cable or digital delivery.)  The HFPA’s reminders list committee will consider application of this suspension of the rules on a case-by-case basis when compiling the annual Golden Globe reminders list in the fall.”

oh ok but i feel like their corrupt enough that they'd be more willing to fudge their rules than the Oscars. still, no reason why if the best actor field is looking a little weak, why LMM can't sneak in there or something.

Seems like a logical prospect considering how so many things are on hold. Not understanding the freakouts and denial of the mere possibility I'm seeing from so many Oscar pundits on Twitter...

At worst it'll take place during the summer when (hopefully) a vaccine is available and events with hundreds if not thousands can occur again (the fall festivals as we know them aren't happening this year, which will be interesting to see how they proceed with their prestige titles that were aiming to build buzz from them). In all likelihood everything will be pushed back a month with the Golden Globes/SAG in February and BAFTA/Oscars in March.
