So this is coming out on FUCKING BLU RAY on December 20... I legitimately thought they'd hold off on PVOD until that date at earliest.

This is insane man. It'll have been playing only Semi-wide for like 40 days before it comes out on Bluray and will only have opened in like 2 locations (the 2 it's playing in right now).

Make this make sense to me. This movie is doing pretty well. Having nice drops in the locations it's playing in. What is the rationale here? Let these movies fucking play!

Theaters are dead. Long live streaming.

It's doing well tho

I can understand putting it on PVOD by then, and even streaming bc of previously signed contracts with HBO Max, but releasing it on blu ray before its even out in like 90% of its total locations is so unbelievably dumb.

Just follow the fucking strategy of Three Billboards. I get that was 5 years ago now, and in terms of moviegoing, that's basically equivalent to a lifetime ago, but at least wait for SOME awards noms to come in. This could have had a nice healthy little gross.

Three Billboards had a later release date and was making more money, so it could hang on long enough to get a theatrical boost from Oscar nods. It was still in hundreds of theaters on Oscar night!

Banshees has done better than some awards hopefuls this year, but the per theater averages tell the story. If the PTA is so-so in limited/moderate release, it's unlikely to improve dramatically in thousands of locations. Yet, starting out in 2,000 theaters has also not gone well for this fall’s baity entries.

Maybe knowing a legal home viewing  option will be available in 1-2 months is keeping the prestige audience away from theaters. Would delaying a digital release even 70 days really improve attendance for these types of films that much? Worst case, the attendance is still minimal, theaters still drop the movies quickly and the title isn't generating money/attention from any source in the meantime.

The current box office situation really sucks if you liked watching all kinds of movies succeed in theaters.

It really does. It's depressing.

I'm trying to stay positive looking ahead to 2023 though. There's always hope that the theatrical audience at large is going to pick up. It just seems like people don't care about movies now though.
