Should we expect a good Sunday hold, since about half the kids in the country will be off school on Monday?

Or perhaps we should expect that over the next 24 hours, more and more theaters will close.

Kids may be off, but parents don't want them anywhere near a social gathering right now. Movies will be the last thing parents take kids out to, VOD and streaming will benefit.

Train To Busan (2016), probably the best zombie movie I've seen

Eh, that movie had way too much melodrama for a zombie movie. The original Dawn of the Dead and the Snyder remake are the best. The RE movies are also fun when you let go of the fact that they aren't trying to be the games.

I should check Train to Busan out.

Agreed that at least first 3 or 4 RE movies fit the bill til they become SH movies.

@Bordlove NO! The Jerusalem story fuck up, the idiotic Belavia scene, the absolutely most moronic useless dumbest, etc ever wife (that phone call!) are totally unforgivable. Horrible movie, don't you dare make the sequel Brad, it's gonna bomb.

It’s a drastic time out there for movie theaters and studios as the domestic weekend box office is looking to land at a level that hasn’t been seen, arguably since 1998 with an estimated $58.5M. The last time it was this low according to Comscore was the weekend of Sept. 11-13, 1998 with $56.8M. This was at a time when the early September period was a dry period at the box office.

Even the period following Sept. 11, 2001, fared better at the box office with the weekend of Sept. 21-23 grossing $59.7M.

If Saturday jumps are overestimated which seems likely, the weekend will be below 1998

Haven’t seen those but to me I prefer movies where the focus is more on the characters rather than the mindless zombies (and even the attacks were cleverly handled with blocking the windows etc).

maybe it’s not the best zombies film per say,but it’s the best one I’ve seen handling its characters in a zombie setting. Imo anyway if that makes any sense

Exactly what the 1978 Dawn of the Dead is. It's also filled with some brilliant social commentary. The remake is a masterclass in balancing horror and action (geniunely might be the best action-horror film to have  since Aliens).

Very few people are going to be going to theaters for the next 3-4 months.

Numbers are going to get worse every day and they are not going to recover for months.

I'll be surprised if next weekend's total number can hold to 50% of this weekend's number.

Theatres are already starting to close.
More will follow suit over the next few days. Why pay the cost of staffing when no one is coming in.
Likely most if not all will be closed by next weekend.

Uncharted territory ahead....

I expect numbers to continue to trend down. People simply aren't going to go into movie theaters in any large numbers for the foreseeable future.

Even when the pandemic finally passes i don't expect a huge ramp up of audience. It will take time for people to feel comfortable being in close contact with others. It's like an athlete who has a serious injury. They can be completely recovered from the injury, but even after that it takes time for them to feel comfortable and trust their body again.

Even if this is largely contained by June. I don't think it will be until the fall the large masses of people are going to feel comfortable with being together again.

i imagine every movie studio is going to take a beating this year. If i was a studio head I would be thinking of moving my spting/summer 2020 movies to spring/summer 2021 because so many productions are going to get closed I bet alot of the movies currently scheduled for release next year won't make their dates.

TV is going to be interesting as there is likely going to be a time period with very little new content.

Surely some of these studios will turn to streaming...
