So it has to make its money fast with no second run? I’m guessing it won’t get any streaming deals either cause it’ll end up on their own HBO Max.

Seems smart. I doubt many people would rent again or purchase at a later date. This essentially gives WB $5 extra dollars.

According to the article one of the reasons why Trolls and now Scoob went straight to VOD is because they had merchandising tie-ins timed to their originally planned theatrical releases (when I was in Target a couple of weeks ago shopping for food and supplies there was Trolls stuff all over the place) so they figured they might as well go this route and give families shiny new movies to watch while stuck at home. We'll see if the same happens to SpongeBob which was originally supposed to come out in May.

What's also curious is that Universal/Focus still have The High Note set to come out on May 8 (next Friday lol) when they've already removed everything else. Gonna bet they announce that's going to be a Peacock/Xfinity exclusive any day now.

I'm certain Focus is waiting on the AMPAS meeting tomorrow that will work out eligibility and whether Oscars will even happen this year.

 

But yeah this won't be a Peacock exclusive, will be PVOD like Staten Island.

If they're still sticking with that May 8 date I imagine there will be a VOD announcement coming up any day now. The High Note actually looks like the kind of lighthearted movie that would make for easy viewing during a quarantine.

 

I know everyone is declaring the studio comedy dead with all these movies now going to streaming, but who knows what will get made once we return to everyday life since comedies are still relatively cheap and people will be looking for escapist fare for a while. FWIW Billy Eichner said the other week in an interview that his gay romcom from Nick Stoller and Universal was preparing to shoot before everything shut down so all hope doesn't seem to be lost for the studio comedy genre yet (since the chances of that eventually going straight to VOD are slim due to potentially bad optics).
