is there any correlation between the different VoD services? how come 1917 is number 1 on Apple (which I assume is just the itunes store correct?) but it's not even in the top 10 on Amazon.

is it a pricing or advertising issue? ...or could be a difference in release date? but I think most stuff drop digitally on itunes & amazon simultaneously

It's all a matter of what people gravitate towards to, probably.

Personally I'm most impressed that Bombshell is charting so high on both over lighter/more commercial-friendly fare. Maybe people want to be reminded of how shitty Fox News is (especially with how bad their coverage of COVID-19 has been).

The Trolls decision looks like insanity to me.
almost like Universal just throwing money away.  That movie would have done well whatever time of year they released it.

I’m wondering whether the fact it had already released in a few countries was the main factor? They can’t control any leaked content, so sitting on the movie for the rest of the world might make them believe people would seek it out by other means?

regardless, releasing just to rent for twenty bucks, when parents can buy Onward for the same, or wait two weeks to have it on Disney+....... hmmmm. I’m really not sold on this $20 VOD trial. Just let people buy the movies.

Trolls 2 for 20 bucks for keeps though in April - now that would make more sense.

I think studios will end up regretting pushing all their movies to streaming early. Sure, it helps them recoup some of their costs while theaters are closed, but it also means there'll be no new content when cinemas finally reopen. No one is going to want to release something big like WW84 until the waters have been tested to see if audiences are willing to return. Those first few weeks when they reopen would have been an ideal time to bring back films like Onward, The Invisible Man, etc. so people who didn't get a chance to catch them on their shortened run can go see them. But now they'll have nothing to show audiences except indie films and movies that are already on DVD/streaming. Maybe that means when we finally do get a big new release it will break out, but I think audiences will need time to adjust back to going out to the movies.

I'm starting to think about how many movies are never going to get made now, and even how many that had been greenlighted end up not being made because the movie studios are going to be lacking revenue to make movies.

Movie studios are going to lose alot of potential revenue this year with theaters closed that would have been used to fund movie productions in the future. Once this crisis passes (and understand that may not be for 12-18 months given health officials expect multiple waves were we will be able to loosen restrictions for a little while and then have to reinstitute them) and they actually start making movies again the studios are going to have tough choices about what to make as their revenue stream is going to be so impacted this year. My gut is studio executives are likely over the next couple of years to only greenlight films they believe are going to be significant profit makers for them as they will need to refill their coffers to them start a more robust filming schedule a few years from now.
