Here, he turns Aaron Sorkin’s take on the rise of Facebook into a study of personal alienation and obsession, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) as a compelling ironic figure: the perfectionist who makes billions on relationships in online space, despite (or maybe because of) not being able to maintain them in real life. Cut with industrial precision to a moody electronic score and bolstered by a uniformly superb supporting cast (with Justin Timberlake and Armie Hammer as the standouts), this is smart, entertaining, and beautiful to look at. BOT Sez: “I don't think TSN was just "cold but great filmmaking", it was an insight about our generation and how internet affected our lifestyles. The fast-paced editing (the facemash/phoenix party and the courtroom scenes, for example) or the confusing dialogue about multiple things in the intro are metaphors to our "gotta-do-everything-at-the-same-time" behaviour on our constantly wired life.

Commentary: The one that was derisively referred to as "the Facebook movie" for months after its announcement only to become the most acclaimed film of 2010 upon its release. It prompted more energized critical writing than any American movie in two or three years, and became a rare non-genre milestone for a generation of young cinephiles just getting into film - and when it came to this countdown, despite missing the top 3, it received more #1 placements from individual participants than any other film.

Commentary: As much of a turning point in Nolan's career as The Dark Knight, with him seizing the moment and immediately proving his bona fides as a creator of original blockbusters. A trickily structured blend of high-concept sci-fi action and heist movie, it became the talk of summer 2010 and allegedly baffled studio executives, whose ultimate takeaway from its enormous success was that it's okay to finance original nine-figure-budget tentpoles made by Nolan, but not so much those by anybody else.

The Social Network remains an amazing movie but what's even more amazing about it today is looking back at all the mostly unknown young actors at the time who turned into stars after its release. Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Rooney Mara, Armie Hammer, and (even though she's in it for only five minutes) Dakota Johnson would all go on to become established names over the decade. I think that and Short Term 12 are gonna be the movies that people look back on as the movies of the 2010s that spawned so many future stars.

I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan of Inception (although maybe it's due for another rewatch), but I can't deny Nolan's artistry as a director. Like that hallway sequence, absolutely blew my mind the first time I watched it.
