Movies for the last two weeks:

Network - 9/10

Persona - 6/10

My Neighbor Totoro - 10/10

Johnny English Strikes Back - 5/10

Godzilla - 9/10

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance - 6/10

The Young Girls of Rochefort - 9/10

Memories of Murder (rewatch) - 10/10

Only Yesterday - 8/10

My Neighbors the Yamadas - 8/10

Hard Boiled - 10/10

In the Mood for Love - 10/10

Police Story 2 - 8/10

House - 7/10

Police Story 3: Super cop - 9/10

Chungking Express - somewhere around 9/10 and 8/10. Absolutely love the 2nd part but I'm not too sure about the first part. I heard the first part gets better with a rewatch though.

Hero - 10/10

The Heroic Trio - 8/10 (this movie was literally unavailable to buy/rent online anywhere so I had to watch a bad quality version on Youtube with some cheesy dubbing but I guess the dub fit the tone of the film).

Irma Vep - 9/10

Tv shows:

Watched a couple episodes of Modern Family on Netflix which was boring.

Games:

TLOU 2 (entire game) - Talked a lot about this already. Probably the most engaging game I've played in ages and probably my favourite story in a game. Felt so many complicated feelings that I didn't think was possible when playing a game. Could honestly become my favourite game of all time when I replay it next week.

Outer Wilds - Interesting game with a lot of really fun exploration.

Which one? There are 2 real Godzilla movies to choose. Mind you, they are both at the lowest minimum a 9/10.

Spoiler

Except ofc the unreal 98 travesty.

Batman (1989) - pretty bad!

Batman Returns - pretty good!

Rewatched Succession, even better than I remember.

Had TLOU 2 unopened since launch day since I wanted to replay TLOU first but I keep forgetting to replay it, so idk when I'll actually get around to it.

Watched Ron Howard's Backdraft last night. Probably an 8 for enjoyability, an 8 for performances, and another 8 for being pretty well-made, but I imagine it's probably a 4 on the scale of "how close to reality is its depiction of firefighting".

8+8+8+4=28/40, which equals 7/10.

BACKDRAFT is such a hammy delight. And awesome Hans Zimmer score too.

Netflix's Dark Season 3 (Finale) - One of the best time traveling shows I've watched and will go down as one of my top Netflix shows ever. I didn't think I would be so captivated by a time travel show where everyone ends up related to each other by the end. The attention to detail throughout the 3 seasons especially with the amount of characters and timelines being added is insane. The overall ending was satisfying and tied up most loose ends as well. 9.5/10

I'm a day later than I had planned, but I've begun a straight run-through of the James Bond series. I've only seen the first three Connerys, the first and last Brosnans, and all the Craigs all the way through heading in.

Dr. No was more fun than I remembered it being when I caught it on Hulu a few years back. It takes some adjustment to remember that the tropes that feel tired thanks to further development and parody (especially from the first Austin Powers movie, which I watched about a billion times in middle school) were just being established in this film. Sean Connery is so damn good as Bond; he approaches the role with such assurance and swagger that it's no wonder the character caught on with audiences.

But more importantly, I'm also re-watching all the Transformers films this week, and I'm now into the Stanley Tucci portion of everyone's favorite destruction porn saga. :ohmygod:

July 1 to July 3:

Films:

  • The Maltese Falcon: It has a reputation as one of the greatest film noirs of all time; it deserves it. Bogart has real presence, and the supporting cast supports him greatly; just when I thought it would go in one direction, it would take the other; not once was it boring.
  • Intolerable Cruelty: It's not the best Coen Brothers film (though I haven't hated any of their films I've seen thus far), but it's still an interesting Coen Brothers film, being a bit more straightforward than their other films yet keeping that recognisable Coen Brothers touch; Clooney and Zeta-Jones work well together (the Coens can always be relied on to get a good performance from Clooney).
  • The Town: Well-crafted, well-acted, taut and dark without being too violent; just on the strength of this film, I think Ben Affleck could've directed a pretty good Batman film; Renner and Hall do pretty damn good jobs too, though at one point I couldn't help wonder if Hall's accent slipped a little.

TV:

  • Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries: Aussie murder mystery series; am currently on season 2 and waiting for Phryne and Jack to hook up.
  • Spaced: First episode and half of second episode; quite enjoyed it; even on this, Edgar Wright's directing style shines through, which I think helps in my liking it, as gives the show a pretty unique look compared to other sitcoms.

Woah, the week is already over. That passed quickly.

Week 13

27 June - 03 July, 2020

Movies

  1. Once Upon a Time in West: This was pretty great. 2nd fav Western after Good Bad and Ugly. 8/10.
  2. Kedarnath: So this is an Indian film about 2013 Cloud Burst in Kedarnath (A Hindu Temple). The film follows the Titanic route of showing disaster in setting of love story. The romance part is quite decent, Disaster part was okayish for the budget and technical ability of Bollywood, but film end up asking for more. The death of Mansoor, unlike Titanic, is more idiotic than sympathetic. Lenient 4/10.
  3. Relatos Salvajes: LMAO. The english title is Wild Tales and man those are some wild tales, especially the first, third and fifth one. The other three are pretty great too. 8/10.
  4. Good Boys: Few good laughs in the beginning which sadly were also in the trailers, by the end just a bit too kiddish. 4/10.
  5. Star Trek: Into The Darkness: I watched the first one few years back, didn't loved it but it was decent. This is same, okay watch but nothing too good. 6/10.

Movie of the Week: Relatos Salvajes

TV

  1. Dark S03: So I watched it and shared the thread here I guess. Was disappointed TBH, and pretty sad too as the public response is unanimously positive. May be will give it a watch sometime after. No Rating.

Thirst (2009) - 8/10 easily the best Vampire film of the 21st century and maybe ever

The Host (2006) - 8/10, very entertaining genremix (monster film/family drama/political and social satire). The CGI of the monster aged poorly but when everything else is very good, that can easily be forgiven. Appreciated the ending, something that Hollywood movies would never be brave enough.

Doctor Sleep 7,5/10 LOVED the first 2 acts, but the 3rd one was a bit too much Shining-Nostalgia for me. The Shining is my favourite horror movie of all time and i get that they love it too but literally recreating some scenes was a tad too much for me. So a could-be-better third act and two amazing first acts make for an overall good movie. Maybe ill like it even more on the 2nd watch, remains to be seen.

Snowpiercer - 9/10 the only thing a bit annoying for me was the shacky cam in some action scenes, other than that ... yeah, its a Masterpiece.

I went to the movies twice today. I must say the NOS theater chain is the absolute example that other big TCs must follow. I couldn't feel safer. They are doing everything right. Having said that, the movies I saw were...

MV5BZDIzNDk0YWYtZjQwZC00NTljLWFiNDktYzRk

A fantastic sci-fi premisse full of thrills and twists with great performances from Lexy Kolker and Emile Hirsch. They did some amazing looking things with what surely was a very low budget. I highly recommend it.

... and...

2M7XCs1EcMZQNfVF9iLXMlWuvfH-1200x1800.jp

A mistery thriller with a really good cast wasted on a weak premise. Everyone is the best it can in it considering the script is very weak. God bless Ana de Armas, she cannot not look perfect.
