Movies
Kiki’s Delivery Service-I know there’s a lot of high praise for this but I thought it was just fine.

Porco Rosso-This one I totally dug.    Keaton’s voice work was great.

TV

Over the past week or so watched the first three seasons of the Sopranos.   On the rewatch it seems a little underrated.   Maybe it’s been taken for granted.   But there’s some impeccable stuff.   That third season is as good as any.

As an aside I’m five episodes into season 4 and it’s a noticeable step down

Random re watches on prime.

Juice - 8/10 - Nice 90s crime thriller. 2pac is great in this.

Napoleon Dynamite - 8/10 - Saw it and liked when it first came out but loving it even more now. Just a unique movie. Humor holds up very well for me.

Legend of Drunken Master - 9/10 - Classic stuff from Jackie Chan.

Rewatched the first two Ocean's movie and they are both much better than I remembered. Had a much better appreciation of the cinematography and editing this time and they're just so much fun. And man, Catherine Zeta-Jones looks so good in Ocean's 12 (and the movie clearly knows this). Still haven't gotten to watching Ocean's 13 but maybe I'll watch it this time. This has been a pretty good week considering the 3 movies I've seen so far have all been 10/10s.

I haven’t seen much lately, but I’ve been slowly working through the Ghibli collection on HBO Max.

Spirited Away and Nausicaa were both way weirder than I expected, in a good way. Howl’s Moving Castle was also great. LEGO Movie 2 was okay (I had very low expectations). Some cute songs though. The Neverending Story  rushed in spots but lots of good stuff. Such a classically 80s approach to fantasy.

I remember Bacurau was rather high on my 2019 list (either top 30 or top 20). that movie had a neat aesthetic. Brazil didn't submit it as their Oscar movie last year they instead went with the invisible life of Euridice Gusmao which I still need to see.

yeah Bacurau is pretty cool. i didn't know anything about it so i was kinda rolling my eyes at the start when it was seeming like a basic Cannes Film Festival Art house poverty porn movie but then it gets wild and i had a great time with it.

Here's my top 10 atm: 20200613_020038.jpg

Expect Shirley to make it in there when I watch it later this month and Ema if Mubi is available here (I saw no "not available in this region" message so I assume I can use it).

Mubi is available in most countries but the problem is so many movies are region locked. I don't think Ema was available in my country last time I checked. the good thing about Mubi though is that it's free if you have a university student email.

btw The Lodge is only worth watching if you're looking for a discount Ari Aster slow burn drama that's pretending to be a horror movie. and the cinematographer is the same dude who shot The Lobster which I really loved, so there's that.

Week 10: 06-12 June 2020

Watched few Korean films this week, was motivated by BOT Foreign film listing, but didn't really found anything worth listing, though found one non-Korean.

  1. 3 Iron: Now here's film you don't see the protagonist speak even once on screen. The concept is unusual but is thoroughly engaging and builds right amount of intrigue. 7/10.
  2. Capernaum: Simply brilliant. The child actor Zain is very lovable and whatever he does in film is very touching in this emotional tale. 8/10

Ps. The lead actor was a Syrian refugee & has a similar life condition before the film. He is now an actor in Eternals.

  3. Extreme Job: Fun cop flick, with good laughs throughout. 6/10.
  4. Twilight (Re-watch): https://twitter.com/iamjat32/status/1270307076284149760?s=19
  5. The Lighthouse: Watched it after Twilight rewatch, Pattinson is great actor, wonder what exactly was wrong with him in Twilight. Anyhow, great acting in rather okayish film. 6/10.
  6. Gulabo Sitabo: First Bollywood major film to skip Theatrical release and release directly on OTT. The film is from director with really great track record, this not so much. Still pretty good flick with good acting performance. Would have flopped theatrically though. 6/10.
  7. The Handmaiden: Erotic Thriller which is one, very erotic, two quite decent thriller. There's a one very good sequence in the end with can say film's two main antagonist. Overall a good film boosted by well the above two. 7/10.

Movie of the Week: Capernaum

Was a good week.

Movies:

Lawrence of Arabia - 10/10

Ocean's 11 - 10/10

Ocean's 12 - 10/10

The King of Staten Island - 9/10

Da 5 Bloods - 7/10

TV shows:

I Know this Much is True episode 5 - The flashbacks in this in episode were incredibly bleak but it had a slightly uplifting ending.

Games:

The Evil Within - Extremely frustrating in a good way (like a good horror game should be) and I just love how ridiculous this game is.

Spider-man - I'm actually having a lot of fun playing the game right now. But still, the open world feels incredibly empty.

Sadly wasn't able to replay TLOU because I wasn't able to find the disk anywhere in my house. Probably going to try searching again because I really want to replay this before playing TLOU 2.

Capernaum rules, most shrug off that movie for being nothing more than misery porn but it's actually much more than that, and tackles important issues that happen in the middle east.

if you enjoyed a movie as pessimistic as this, you might like The Fool (2014) even more.

edit: if you want more korean thrillers, check out The Chaser or I Saw The Devil. (they're quite gorey though especially the latter).

*Before Sunset (2004) - 10/10

Before Sunset is my favourite film of all time. Been rewatching a couple scenes from and listening to the soundtrack (A Waltz for a Night gets me every single time I listen to it) recently and I got reminded of how much I love this film. Thinking of rewatching the trilogy later this month.

TV Shows:

What We Do In the Shadows Season 2 - I enjoyed Season 1 quite a bit but Season 2 was a big step up in quality. Definitely one of the best comedies out there at the moment. The season finale was superb and sets up some very intruging questions for Season 3. Sad to hear Jermaine Clement won't be that involved in writers room for next season.

Agents of SHIELD Season 7 - Another pretty good episode and some nice connections to Agent Carter.

Star Wars Rebels Season 3 - Finished rewatching the finale of Sesaon 3 and forgot how much of a beating the rebels took. Can't wait for Season 4 which from memory was my favourite season.

Arrested Development Season 2 - Still on the early part of Season 2 but on rewatch gravitating much more to Maeby as my favourite character on the show. Enjoyed the dynamic whenever she is paired up with Michael.

The Office Season 3 - Yeah I can now see why everyone loves this show. Dwight has really grown on me these past couple of episodes.

Movies:

Finding Nemo: 9/10 Yeah this will always remain one of my favourite Pixar movies. One of those movies that's firmly ingrained in my childhood memories.

Finding Dory:  7.5/10 On rewatch this is actually a pretty worthy companion piece to Nemo though does fall a bit apart by the 3rd Act (and certainly does require a way bigger suspension of disbelief).

I watched Da 5 Bloods, felt like Lee's most ambitious work based on its scale, Lindo is locked to win supporting actor if they go for supporting (since this is ensemble and they focused on 2 characters the most it could go either way) if not then he's 50/50

were there any other references to Apocalypse Now besides

Spoiler

the ending? and that one scene in the bar which wasn't really a reference lol just a sign

felt like there was more but I prolly missed them.
