People gotta give The Empty Man a try. Although it's quite long, I enjoyed it a lot more than any other horror film released this year except The Invisible Man. Some really ambitious and interesting ideas and creative decisions in this film and it's not the shitty "The Bye Bye Man" type horror film that the studio marketed (when they barely did) it as.

Watched The Midnight Sky last night. Hard to believe Clooney could've made a space movie that would end up such a humorless drag but that's what we get here, even though he gives a very good performance (as does the rest of his overqualified cast with what they're given) and Desplat's score is memorable and deserving of a better movie.

So, it's the New Year, so I thought I'd do my holiday movies and then follow up later with what I really watched:).  It wouldn't have been an end to 2020 if I hadn't done another JGL movie, so you even get one here:)...

Christmas Chronicles 1 - B - A good sweet movie and Kurt Russell chews the scenery like a Santa champ.

Christmas Chronicles 2 - C - An example of the sequel that gets made for the money that should never be made.  The one redeeming factor was seeing Goldie Hawn chew the scenery as Mrs. Claus.

The Night Before - C - It just didn't work.  It was so slow and kinda depressing for a long while and the cliche ending, well, it did the Christmas feels, but I'm not sure I accepted it on the movie:).  But, the movie gets the C b/c there were a few (but not nearly enough) "laughing so hard I almost snorted my drink" moments - the Church scene can be rewatched all on its own.  JGL was fine, doing his best work when it was an emotional scene, and not a humor scene, but then again, he was cast to be the mostly "straight" man to the other 2 loonies:).

It's A Wonderful Life (rewatch) - B+ - Okay, I raised my grade pretty high here (from where I would have originally graded this movie years ago when I hated it), but I think having seen this again as an older person, what bothered me so much about George Bailey before and his wallowing in his own decision-making can get kinda forgiven...and his wife, I now see, is the true MVP, so I respect that aspect of the movie way more.  That, and everyone has stolen from this movie everywhere, so if you're good enough to steal, you're good enough to get a good grade.

Watched all of the first season of The Flight Attendant this weekend. Pretty good! Also just the right role Kaley Cuoco needed to show she has range beyond Penny.

I just started this and I am AMAZED by her acting.  I had no idea she can completely carry a show on her back.  She's genius in episode 1, and I'm looking forward to finishing the 1st season.

Steven Universe Future - A perfect ending to a show that means quite a lot to me. The show was a really big part of my late childhood and considering that this season is all about Steven grown-up and dealing with the shit that happened to him as a kid and figuring what he wants to know do with his life and moving on from his childhood, I feel like I watched it during the perfect point in my life (maybe could've watched it a bit sooner actually).

There have been many shows that I love and many more that I will love, but don't think any of them will have the impact this one has had on me as a person. Even very few movies have. I'm really happy and grateful that this show exists.

For last year:

20210114_022351.jpg

Clint is my most watched actor with 8 films and Spielberg is most watched director with 25 films. Goal for this year is for Clint to be both my most watched actor and director. Gonna try going through all of his directorial work I haven't seen yet or needs rewatching, like I did with Spielberg last year.

God bless HBO Max's "Last Chance" section. It actually gives you an incentive to watch stuff, and it's surprising other services don't have this kind of tab. I was hoping to get some more in, but my laptop is busted, but hopefully it'll get fixed sooner rather than later.

And also I'm gonna push In & Of Itself hard when the BOFFYs/Top 25 come around next year. Don't know what non-Hulu services it's on internationally, but it'll be hard for any movie to top this for me.

I know it’s kind of a niche streaming channel, but Criterion does this as well: a section of movies that are leaving at the end of the month.

I have really slowed down.

January

Movies

1. Enchanted - The idea was good and it is good, just could have been better perhaps. 6/10.

2. Nomadland - It sure gives a peek in life of a nomad, and that part works well halfway through the film. Half of it is just landscape porn which feels really really cold, literally and figuratively. 3/10.

3. Run - Searching was no fluke. Aneesh Chaganty is here to rule. Right from the first shot to the last frame, the film keep you engaged. Loved the pay-off. 8/10.

4. Happiest Season - The girls are pretty, film could have been better. 3/10.

5. The Matrix - I remember watching it as a noob and was like action's good but plot...

Well today, I loved the concept, really well done, and action felt like just accessories, which for 1999 is quite well done. 8/10.

6. Matrix Reloaded - Yeah this is BS. Freeway sequence stands out, rest all is bleh. Guess I don't need to watch the third one anymore. 3/10.

7. Master - A good South Indian commercial potboiler. 5/10.

TV

1. Wanda Vision - The besssssssssstttttt.

Nice, do you have some post with your Kubrick output thought ?

Unfortunately, I didn't put my thoughts. I find it really hard to praise a film. Criticising something is easy, as then I know what didn't work, when film is good, "its all good man".

Week 17

25-31st July

Movies

  1. Dil Bechara: This might have passed as decent thing if I hadn't seen The Fault in Our Stars. 3/10.
  2. Following: Brilliant. Among my top Nolan films easy. 8/10.
  3. Insomnia: I guess the most non-Nolan, Nolan film but great stuff. Also Robin Williams is great in it. 8/10.
  4. Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom: 💩0/10.
  5. Barry Lyndon: Resuming Kubrick filmography. This gave me GWTW vibes. 8/10.
  6. Spartacus: 8/10.
  7. Shakuntla Devi (Hindi): The film was very pretty good in first two acts, but third act felt like not fully developed. A lenient 6/10.
  8. Lolita: Kubrick's weakest for me. There are two others, won't be watching them. 5/10.
  9. Lootcase (Hindi): I was expecting this to be Andhadhun level good but this was neither than smart nor funny. Decent watch though. 5/10.
