SEPTEMBER

Did not watch a lot of stuff this month. Super busy with work and am in the midst of a few new TV shows which take up evenings.

Movies

Atonement - 10/10 - I was completely blindsided by this film, emotional wreck.

Big - 9/10

Evangelion 2.0 - 9/10

Winter’s Bone - 9/10

The Green Knight - 8.5/10

Evangelion 3.0+1.01 - 8.5/10 - An emotional finale that I found just as (if not more) effecting than the original show. The plot is somewhat incoherent and I don’t care for the 3D animation but it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Shang-Chi - 7.5/10

Malignant - 7/10 - The audacity of this film impresses me the more I think about it. I still don’t think Wan nails the tone completely, but the blood soaked third act gives me sheer joy.

Evangelion 3.0 - 7/10

Big Eyes - 6/10

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf - 6/10

Triple Threat - 5/10 - This and 'Kate' are only getting a 5/10 for having pretty good action, 'Triple Threat' has the stronger action but Kate has Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Story/characters are whatever in both.

Kate - 5/10

Chaos Walking - 4/10 - This is not nearly as bad as people make out to be, I was quite onboard with the initial character dynamics, the concept and even how it is was visualised. What really kills the film is the underwritten Daisy Ridley character who has literally nothing to do and a increasingly dull second half where the film stumbles to nowhere.

TV

The North Water - 9/10 - Somewhat straightforward plot but a real sense of atmosphere, strong visual choices and incredible performances all around help elevate the show into something more. Why is Jack O’Connell not as big as he should be. It seemed like he was going to pop after Starred Up.

The White Lotus - 8.5/10

September

Movies

  1. Gangs of New York - Gangs of Wasseypur is much better film than this. Check it out y'all. 4/10.
  2. Malignant - The first half of film is really boring, does get interesting with the twist but ends again on rather routine note. 5/10.
  3. Ice Age: Dawn of Dinosaurs - I wanted to complete Top 100 Grossers list on Letterboxd. This was first one of six that were missing and actually quite okay kids flick. 6/10.
  4. Hi, Mom - On bright side, its not as bad as Wolf Warrior 2. The comedy doesn't really work, the emotional twist in the end was actually good and lift whole film up but isn't enough. They could have done quite a bit more with "time travelling to your parents" bit, instead of almost nothing, what they did. The film could have used younger lead. 3/10.
  5. Puaada - 3/10
  6. Candyman - The film has a really great trailer. 3/10.
  7. Dear Evan Hansen - The lead is awful and feel awkward. Shame after watching the film only I realised that this is from director of PoBWFoW and Wonder, two movies I love. 3/10.
  8. Ice Age: Continental Drift - Just like DoD, not bad. 5/10.
  9. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull - Atleast not as bad as Temple of Doom. 3/10.
  10. The Fate of the Furious - I wish Dom burned to death in first scene of film. 0/10.
  11. Independence Day - I thought I will not like it and had Battleship vibes from it, but turned out quite nice actually. 7/10.
  12. Free Guy - This is what if Westworld (with pinch of Matrix) was a video game done right. Loved it. Best film of the year so far for me. 8/10.
  13. Ternet Ninja - 8/10.
  14. Quantum of Solace - Now I have seen all Craig Bond movies, not my cup of tea. Action scenes are bad & plots are boring. Skyfall & Spectre have better action of the lot. Ethan Hunt FTW. 2/10.
  15. Old - 8/10
  16. Anchorman - I have probably seen all the fun bits in meme GIFs, what leaves of it is incredibly unfunny 80 mins. Steve Carell and Paul Rudd though. 3/10.

TV

  1. What If (ongoing) - Going well. Check thread.
  2. Sex Education S03 - Twitter Thread. 5/10
  3. Brooklyn 99 S08 - Final season wasn't bad, so that's a relief but for my fav sitcom 3 years ago (till S5), I felt nothing for it ending.
  4. Visions - was a good watch, some more than others, my picks be The Duel, The Elder & The Ninth Jedi. Good to see different style & stories in Star Wars universe, most of them actually having motives & not just random 'rule the galaxy', looking forward to more. 7/10.

Finished my Clint Marathon:

Hereafter - 8/10

J. Edgar - 5/10

Jersey Boys - 5/10

American Sniper - 7/10

Sully - 8/10

The 15:17 to Paris - 4/10

The Mule - 9/10

Richard Jewell - 8/10

Cry Macho - 8/10 - One of the most beautiful films of the year and hit way harder now that I can view it as the next piece of an evolving filmography where he's been tackling similar ideas and themes for decades now.

More in depth thoughts and ranking here:

September:

Shang Chi - 6/10 - Comes close to top tier marvel but held back by flat, ugly visuals and a dull third act that doesn't embrace the fantasy elements as much as it should. Tony Leung's scenes and the flashbacks are the best parts of the film and emotionally sincere but the rest is more of the same.

Stillwater - 8/10

Malignant - 9/10

Titane - 6/10 - I can understand the appeal but I got numbed and bored by the gross out body horror shock of it all halfway through. The "sweet" emotional stuff also didn't hit me in the slightest, felt nothing.

Cherry - 3/10 - Confirmed all my worst suspicions about the Russos.

Card Counter - 8/10

One Second - 8/10 - Zhang Yimou is a new discovery for me and this alongside his two most recent film have been great. This one was unfortunately censored by the Chinese government but the film is still beautiful and works really well even if what got dulled down is a bit obvious in some scenes.

Shutter Island - 8/10

Annette - 4/10 - I could stomach a long musical, I cannot stomach a long sung through musical, especially when most of the songs are really bad.

The Matrix - 10/10

Shiva Baby - 8/10

Matrix Reloaded - 9/10

Office Space - 7/10

Red Rock West - 8/10 - Incredibly underrated Nic Cage film.

Matrix Revolutions - 7/10

The Right Stuff - 10/10 - One of the last American epics, they really don't make them like this anymore.

Casino Royale - 10/10

Quantum of Solace 7/10

The Long Goodbye - 9/10

If you liked RED ROCK WEST, check out THE LAST SEDUCTION and BREAKDOWN — different than RRW but sort of kissing cousins, as it were.

watched squid game. starts very strong all the games are tense as hell. completely falls off in the last three episodes. looking forward to the second season everyone's going to hate.

Well, I can't hate on the second season when I'm probably never gonne see the first (which I should've probably done with other "big shows" with shit second seasons like Ted Lasso and The Boys).

How I think the creator feels having to write the follow up to such a massively successful breakout hit
Oh No Help GIF by The Swoon

And yeah the last 2 eps were the weakest for me but I thought they were still ok and the season was really entertaining as a whole with some great characters.

I should've posted about it here way back when I actually watched it, but the anime series Odd Taxi is really good. It's on Crunchyroll. I would compare it to a Guy Ritchie film or a Quentin Tarantino film; the script is very tight, with everything in the story being there for a reason.

5 episodes into Midnight Mass and this is the absolute peak of limited series that should’ve just been a movie. Somewhere in the 98th ten minute monologue about redemption or whatever I’m sitting there thinking about how much the 105 minute version of this premise probably kicks ass.
