With daily case numbers now soaring past 100K, movies are basically unsellable right now. Guessing Wonder Woman abandons December within the next few days when the election will no longer be completely dominating the news.

Yup. I don't see any movie releasing until March at the earliest, and I feel that's being optimistic.

Universal/Focus still have their deal with AMC (although other chains are playing their movies too) so those will come out. Won't mean a whole lot since they're being dumped on the market before a VOD release. Look out for in a couple of weeks when The Croods 2 achieves one of the biggest sequel drop-offs ever for reasons that had zero to do with the actual movie.

Pretty good given the circumstances, as usual. The reviews were good too so in a normal climate this could've played well as a counterprogramming option for older audiences (my mom is a big time fan of both Diane Lane and Kevin Costner and expressed a lot of interest in it, for example).

This is pretty much what we can expect going forward for now as the case numbers reach scary new heights. Maybe Freaky will hit $5M next weekend with the Friday the 13th gimmick.

Expect a big upspike in number in the US post  Thanksgiving. That Holiday is going to be a pretty good spreader.

BOM has Freaky as "Limited" next weekend. Wonder how wide it's going to actually go. If it's ~2000+ I could see 5+M but we'll see.

Looking above, most of the "wide" releases in November will follow with PVOD by the looks very shortly after. so nothing really to see here from a cinema perspective.

As for december, Wonder Woman is likely to shift to summer at this point.  Coming 2 America is going PVOD / Streaming already so i doubt it will be in cinemas leaving only News of the World and Monster Hunter which is essentially a January release.  So very little left there.

Looking at the Jan release calendar, I can't see Mortal Kombat or Chaos Walking staying put - both films probably too expensive and will need to move deep into Summer 2021 or beyond.  I feel like Peter Rabbit 2 may stay put at this point and probably lean towards a PVOD or similar route with a limited cinema release domestically.  no idea on the rest at this point.

February currently has Cinderalla, The Kings Man and a handful of mid range releases.  not really sure those will stay put - maybe a few of the lower releases if the cases do start to drop off by then and cinemas reopen a little ? but it's a big if.

In my mind i'm not seeing major releases until at least March at this point, with a hopeful build up to the major releases in April / May and beyond - and i think i'm optimistic on this anyway.

Am I being a little pessimistic ? :whosad:

Theater Owners Chief Warns Cinemas Will Go Bankrupt Unless Congress Acts

I think theaters are dead. Republicans hate Hollywood and the actors all supported Biden. I don't see how Republicans will bail out theaters.

Completely disagree. It wouldn't have made blockbuster money in any scenario, but it's the kind of well-reviewed thriller starring two beloved veterans that could've easily made something like $14M/$50M in a regular climate. It was just aimed at an audience that isn't seeing movies right now for health/safety reasons.
