BOT's Top Foreign Films of All Time Poll Deadline July 12th, for realsies this time, that is the final deadline

Recommended Posts

I totally understand where you're coming from chasmmi, arguing on the Internet can be pointless and soul-crushing sometimes.

But we're not reddit trolls (who have made me abandon arguments and hope in humanity many times), we're long-time members of this community, not complete strangers, who are generally the ones you want to avoid. And for the most part, I think we're arguing in good faith that a popularity bonus for movies in a top where only the most popular movies will likely get through is, well, redundant, and will disproportionately advantage those movies even more. They basically get double points, and obscure movies will be fighting an even more uphill battle than they normally are.

Won't prevent me from participating though

It is just easier this way as it otherwise leads to a potential slippery slope of having to make a ruling on every Hollywood/American film where somebody speaks foreign and before you know it A Good Day to Die Hard finishes 12th and we have to dissolve the whole forum.

I mean they don't have a single English word in them (not even English dubbing), filmed with predominantly not English speaking cast. Of course this is your game and your rules, but I think there is a clear distinction between Passion and for example Inglorious Basterds which has major parts of the movie where the characters speak English both native and non-native speakers.

Have a couple of films left to watch but I just wanted to give my current list:

  1. My Neighbour Totoro
  2. Ran
  3. Police Story
  4. Close-Up
  5. The Tale of Princess Kaguya
  6. Oldboy
  7. Memories of Murder
  8. Spirited Away
  9. Parasite
  10. Incendies
  11. Godzilla (1954)
  12. Don't Go Breaking My Heart
  13. Throne of Blood
  14. The Handmaiden
  15. Akira
  16. A Town Called Panic
  17. Mother (2009)
  18. Persepolis
  19. Roma
  20. Hey Ram
  21. Certified Copy
  22. The Night is Short, Walk on Girl
  23. The Young Girls of Rocherfort
  24. Your Name
  25. The Hunt
  26. Castle in the Sky
  27. Wolf Children
  28. Drug War
  29. My Mother's Castle
  30. The Night Comes For Us
  31. Summer Wars
  32. The Killer
  33. The Raid
  34. Come and See
  35. A Separation
  36. Pan's Labryinth
  37. Howl's Moving Castle
  38. The Host
  39. Phoenix
  40. Paprika
  41. Shadow
  42. 13 Warriors
  43. Jallikattu
  44. Firaaq
  45. Princess Mononoke
  46. Porco Rosso

I think I'll be able to get 50 once I finish the movies I have list. I watched a lot of 2010s foreign films because of the 2010s list which is why my list has heavy 2010s representation (and my movie-watching over the past few weeks have been pretty inconsistent due to summer college assignments and The Last of Us 2). Over the next 4 days, I'm gonna try to get these movies watched: Only Yesterday, My Neighbours the Yamadas, Police Story 2 and 3, Fallen Angels, In the Mood for Love, The Battle of Algiers, Smiles of a Summer Night, and maybe Yi Yi.

Edit: Forgot Pan's Labryinth.

Oooh yes Raise the Red Lantern is some good shit. Dunno if it’ll be in my top ten but it’s super underrated

Generally Zhang Yimou gets a lot more love for his action stuff like Hero, Flying Daggers, Shadow but his 80s/90s stuff with Gong Li  is the best shit. The Story of Qiu Ju (literally a movie about a guy getting kicked in the balls) will also be high on my list!

Definitely not known as Johnnie To's quintessential movie, audacious pick. It missed my top 100 because I thought the movie was manipulative a bit.

I like your list. We have similar tastes

I've only been watching a lot of Hong Kong cinema over the past last month. Haven't gotten around to most of Johnnie To's filmography yet (I watched The Heroic Trio this week actually which I just remembered to add to my list (forgot to add Yimou's Hero too)). Your list actually has a lot of Hong Kong films I've recently added to my watchlist.
