BOT's Top Foreign Films of All Time Poll Deadline July 12th, for realsies this time, that is the final deadline

Recommended Posts

Ok, so we have a very international membership with a lot of international tastes. Therefore it is about time for an international countdown.

The rules for eligibility are simple.

* Must be a foreign production

* Must be (predominantly) in a foreign language

As with everything, there will be caveats, quirks and folks that just love asking nitpicky questions, so these are the ones that I have considered so far...

English Language films by foreign directors and studios are NOT eligible. (e.g. No Snowpiercer)

Foreign Language films made by the Hollywood system are NOT eligible (e.g. No Passion of the Christ)

Animated films, where the original Dub is in a foreign language Are eligible (e.g. Porco Rosso is allowed)

Foreign Language films by a foreign film industry directed by an English Speaker Are eligible (e.g. Raid is allowed)

Films made in an English Speaking nation but that are in a foreign language, by speakers of that language are eligible (I dunno any example, let's assume there is some great Welsh Language film out there somewhere)

Those are all the outlier examples that currently spring to mind. But as always. ask any questions in thread :)

I am not committing to a list length until I see the number and depth of lists sent in. Like if I get 12 lists covering say 150 different films, I'll make it a top 25. If I get 37 lists that span 512 different films, then I'll do a top 100.

Tentative Deadline is June 29th

A suggestion,
Since many users would have watched limited films, you can use weight system.

Like there will be users who list 100 films as usual but some may list 10, 15 or even random numbers like 33 films.

For such lists, take the number of films listed and divide by 100. Use the ratio to weight the films ranked in list.

For instance. No. 1 film is 50 points, no. 2-5 40 points, 6-10 35 points, 11-15 30 points and so on.

And someone give 13 films. 13/100. His 1st film will have 50*13/100 = 6.5 points, 2-5 films 5.2 points and so on.

That way, a person who has watched only limited films won't be impacting the Ranking more than it should.

How about films that are a combination of english and a foreign language like Certified Copy and Call Me By Your Name? Like what would be considered predominantly foreign language?

I think those are Hollywood produced films. Should be evicted.

Both of them are foreign productions though.

2 production company are from US. So sorta collaboration. That make me wonder about stuff like The Lunchbox as well.

But The Lunchbox didn't had any Hollywood studio. Just some French producers.

I guess shall allow either non-US productions or non-English films no matter who made. The latter seems better and ideal. The first language of film to be Foreign.

I made a preliminary list and found 79 foreign films that I like. But with half of them being Japanese, I really need to catch up on other foreign films.
