A survey has been published in China that offers some insight into how moviegoers might react once the coronavirus pandemic begins to abate.

According to the findings, which come from Maoyan Entertainment, the entertainment company that runs a ticketing platform and box office service in China, 68% of respondents cited going to the cinemas as their top choice for entertainment once the epidemic ends, behind only eating out with friends (69%).
 

A total of 30% of respondents said they would return to cinemas as soon as they reopen, while a slightly higher figure of 33% said they would wait for the official announcement that COVID-19 has been completely contained before returning. A further 29% said they would “wait for a while” after the official announcement before heading back to movie theaters.

Many agree: Paramount’s A Quiet Place Part II and Disney’s Mulan are in a great position to return quickly when theaters revive as both pics have already clocked impressions among potential moviegoers. Industry sources tell me that whenever either film opts to return, they will only need 2-3 weeks in regards to their marketing push.

That seems like a decent strategy for the US. I could see something where when theaters start to come back, they'll just play stuff like Endgame, Joker, Parasite, and maybe Onward, since people aren't going to head out to theaters right away. Hey, maybe Downton Abbey and Addams Family can finally get to 100M.

95% drops from last week, and that's on a discount Tuesday.

 

Wednesday will see a bigger than usual Tuesday-to-Wednesday drop, because I know of a few theaters that were open yesterday and are closed today. So Wednesday will probably give us some 50% drops from Tuesday.

Good question. You might have a few theaters still open in small towns, but all the major chains are closed and all theaters closed by govement order in almost all the major cities in the US, and in a number of states as well.

Our one remaining theater still has times up for next week...also they somehow got The Way Back. Even our schools have shut down next week.

Last Tuesday, Bad Boys made $418K. (Which was a really good weekday this far into its run!) This Tuesday, it made $25K.

Surely Hollywood won't dump 5 new openers on the market all at once when theaters reopen. Holdovers like Onward should have a chance to continue their runs.

 

Of course, as soon as the older movies start making some decent money, studios will see that as a sign that it's safe to dump some new titles on the market. We may get a few movies that are released super quickly with very little time for marketing.

Yeah, probably, since the movie really did get the shit end of the stick for reasons via unrelated circumstances. Maybe put this back out in the summer and move Soul to the holidays (and Raya & the Last Dragon to next summer).

China’s theatrical re-opening will come in waves, the first being the re-release of older local catalog titles, i.e. Monster Hunt, Wolf Warrior 2, The Wandering Earth and animated feature Ne Zha. We understand that Chinese exhibitors will keep 100% of the box office on those re-releases. There’s apparently a deal in the wings with U.S. Studios for catalog titles such as the Avengers movies, Interstellar, Inception, etc, but that’s still being hammered out. Typically, the major studios reap 25% to 27% of the Chinese box office for their newer titles.

The second wave of titles will occur in mid-to-late-April and that will be the U.S. pics that have already been cleared and awaiting release, i.e. 1917, Dolittle, Ford v. Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Bad Boys for Life and Sonic the Hedgehog as well as new Chinese local fare like Detective Chinatown 3.

Looks like Sorcerers Stone will become the second Potter movie to cross 1B
