As for the Host, I could never get into it.  I actually didn't like it at all.  IMHO, there are much better horror movies to come out of SK than this.

He is perhaps senior-most active Indian on the board I guess, and happens to be from the state in India which is known to get best of the cinema, as almost all different language films release there.

I saw the Tamil version of this years ago. Was fine I guess. My family thinks the Malyalam version (which I didn't watch) was better too.

Assumed Plot: Sholay, Sholay, Sholay, Sholaaayy,... wait that's Jolene.  Okay so Sholay is a Classic Bollywood film, to some arguably the most famous and greatest ever. Therefore I am assuming it stars Amitabh Bachchan and at least 2 Khans (not the current Khans, I just kind of assume that Bollywood always has an army of Khans waiting to be deployed.) 

 

As it is 70s Bollywood, I am also gonna plump for this film having the triple love triangle with 3 heroes, 3 girls and 3 villains looking to be all villainous. I Sholay our heroes must protect the village planet town from the evil mobster overlords that threaten to ruin all of their hopes and dreams... with songs. 

 

 

*chuckle* this song title sounds like My Boobies.

 

OKay, I was able to glean like next to no information from that. But I did see an angry man with a giant moustache briefly, so there is one clear villain of the story right there. This film falls about 25 years in the middle of all the Bollywood stuff I have seen so is a bit happier and more colorful than a Mother India, but also much smaller scale than the Shah Rukh era. 

 

This does give India two film entries in a row though and solidifies their 2nd place on the films by nation list, now only one below France at the top. (It would be level if I had decided that the Mario and Luigi film was Italian). I am a big fan of the Indian cinema that I have seen, but I must say I was not expecting it to be doing the heavy lifting for Asian cinema in these early positions.

Copy of Kurosawa and american western movies which created a sterotype "daaku" in hindi cinema who was always on horses, speaking a certain dialect. This is iconic indian-hindi movie that everyone grew up with and has top of the hindi cinema star cast and ensemble movie where every character is well developed, every dialogue became cult, Gabbar became the most recognized villain in hindi cinema of all times, veru-jai friendship, the humor, the coin toss. #nostalgia

Assumed Plot: Above the Steam-punkesque town of (Insert Japanese Name Here), is the legendary flying, Laputa. It is every present, every mysterious, ever flying. It has been flying as long as anyone can remember and nobody has been seen to come in or out. Then one day, the doors open and a single messenger floats down to the town and brings a message that one person will be selected to come up to the Castle on Urgent business. That person is young (protagonist name) and they alone learn the mysteries and secrets of the castle in the sky and how the future of everything is at stake, 

 

It is essentially Charlie and the Chocolate Factory meets Elysium. 

 

 

I'm surprised it took 20 entries for Ghibli to show up, I am also surprised that this is the film that it showed up with. 

 

Don't get me wrong, as obviously I have not seen this film, but I just kind of assumed that if Ghibli was getting films outside of its top tier (general popularity wise), I would have thought something like Porco Rosso (124th), Ponyo (179th) or Arriety (197th) would have been the breakthrough film. 

 

I always forget if this is the first Ghibli film or the Miyazaki film, when it actually kind of is neither of those things. Either way, it brings Japan onto our list and also suggests that Anime is going to make an impact as we go forward. 

 

Edit: I didn't even realise that this was the first Japanese film of any kind on the list. Well that brings the whole of the rest of Asia combined level with India then.

Now this is a film that matters. Gkids has released this perfectly, as they have done with pretty much all of their releases. The highest bitrate possible outdoes the Disney version, and you have multiple options for sound and subtitles. The animation is absolutely top-tier, and any fan of the genre should have this on their to do list if they haven't experienced it yet. Castle in the Sky is probably a top 5 overall film in the Ghibli catalog for me due to some absolutely stunning set pieces that involve a fantasy world that is both detailed and emotionally engaging. There is a sense of wonder here lacking in titles that are less great from this studio. You can tell their creative sensibility is very high with this film.

It is an old film, being released in 1986, and it is Miyazaki's first with Ghibli, but it is not dated in the slightest bit. It's just a timeless retelling of a story about a boy and girl in trouble. And it happens to have some of the most talented animators on the planet let loose to do whatever they please in a steampunk-styled world. The dub is also really good in my eyes, so either the Japanese track or the English dub will do. I think when Ghibli does a dub well, it actually enhances the animation at times. I like both tracks here, and I recommend people listen to them both at some point. Not enough can be said about this one folks. Pure classic. This is a top notch bluray with fantastic detail and resolution. Go out and get this one.
