Kinda annoyed it sold out so fast at NYFF. Why can an online viewing sell out in the first place? :apocalypse:

it's more so the distributor's/producer's decision. they do that to try and replicate a real festival's capacity. although I think Nomadland initially started with only 2000 virtual tickets on TIFF but added more online tickets as the festival went on due to high demand so maybe NYFF would do the same.

The theatrical release is only there for the movie to gain some buzz (dumping it on digital would be a bad look). Wouldn't be surprised if it had a short window.

Still weird we have no other marketing to help build up buzz, even if it's just a short theatrical window. And awards-wise, the momentum has dropped hard since its festival wins, since there's nothing else to sustain it. Getting some form of marketing out there couldn't hurt.

It's because no one knows what's gonna happen with theaters these next few weeks, especially with the way case numbers have been exploding and some states already beginning to move into closing again. Maybe they'll just pivot to PVOD or go to late February right in time for the deadline.

Months ago, Searchlight scheduled Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” for theatrical release on December 4 — and, sources indicate, that’s where it will stay. This is enough to make it an outlier: In what is usually the year’s most crowded release corridor for Oscar movies, it stands alone. It’s even holding its initial, intended date.

It could take shape as a platform release — a one-week qualifying run, possibly only in the area surrounding New York City. If worse comes to worst, it could end up being limited to a virtual cinema platform, and it might: Southern California theaters are already closed, and the New York region could follow suit.

Sources indicate the full run would start February 19, nearly four weeks before the March 15 announcement of Oscar nominees. A platform strategy with weekly expansion would allow for a wide release at the time of the nominations.

Releasing next week...virtually (!) for one week only. Clearly purely to qualify for critics awards which are sticking to calendar year eligibility. Searchlight would have def delayed until Feb 19 as per the above article otherwise.

I guess this is the start of the new norm. Three billboard kind of long run is now a history even virus is gone

Quite honestly makes it even more impressive

It doesn't. Her portrayal of nomad life is very romanticized and not really the "authentic" portrayal it's being marketed as. I didn't mind it, but it's still makes the movie ring more hollow.
