It doesn't. Her portrayal of nomad life is very romanticized and not really the "authentic" portrayal it's being marketed as. I didn't mind it, but it's still makes the movie ring more hollow.

I don’t think she romanticized. I think she didn’t pity them. I don’t think there was any judgment. You saw both of the joy of the lifestyle, and the struggle of the lifestyle. Nothing in that movie was easy. Yet Fern was able to find purpose through the community she built.

The camera-work and the heavy monologuing made the movie feel very romanticised to me. She's clearly influenced by Malick multiple times and he's one of cinema's biggest romanticists. I liked her approach and it's far better than making it misery porn like many others would've done, but it's not authentic. My problem here is how it's being treated as authentic (even if the performances in the film feel quite real) and it just feels very disingenuous to me.

Good decision since the audience for this type of movie still isn't going to a theater. I imagine SPC is working on something similar with The Father.

I doubt it. Considering how they're unable to even get screener distribution done properly, it feels like SPC doesn't want anyone to watch the movie.

Are they going to stick the "Hulu Original" branding on this so they can fuck over Netflix and be the first streamer with a Best Picture win?

No. It'd probably more like what WB has done with their day-and-date releases (not considered Max originals). Don't think Mulan had the D+ original branding either and that was also an unconventional streaming release.

SPC has been incredibly strongly against any sort of VOD forever throughout all this so yeah...

Anyway, the 3-week IMAX window is interesting and I wonder whether 1. that's how they managed to get the OK for day and dating this and 2. Raya and any other Disney/20th will get the same domestically and 3. Whether it could be a test run of sorts for a possibility of Black Widow Premier Access?

@lorddemaxus yeah Mulan didn't, and I'd imagine Raya won't. Hamilton also didn't... Anything that doesn't have a theatrical element at all (or Premier Access) will probably have the D+ or Hulu branding, like Soul.

Also surely this would be such an easy launch title win for Star internationally. The film's currently set for March here in the UK and no way it's hitting that at this rate, and BAFTA eligibility is April 9 so they'll have to release it somehow...

Launching on D+ Star in Canada on April 9...which is the current UK release date (which if I'm not mistaken the latest theatrical date set for it?). Wonder if this ends up going to Star everywhere - UK, Australia, etc - on the 9th?

I actually saw this in the theater last night! I wanted to support the local cinemas upon their reopening, and since there was barely anyone in the building and I made sure to take a number of precautions beyond just the minimum masking and distance policies (never thought I’d go to the movies with my hair in a ponytail as a precaution rather than just a style choice, yet here we are), it felt reasonably safe to do so. I also figured, correctly, that it was a film that would benefit from being seen with fewer distractions.

It’s a beautiful film. McDormand is great in a subtle, heartbreaking performance that gets a ton of mileage out of her mannerisms, and Zhao directs the whole thing with such warmth and intimacy that it feels both real and accessible. If you’re a naturally empathetic person, you’re going to find yourself spending an inordinate amount of time nodding your head as characters speak.

That said, I don’t think it’s really going to get much play outside of film buff circles. I wouldn’t call it slow exactly, but it’s definitely not hurried and it doesn’t necessarily spell things out for viewers. If I had to wager a guess, that’s probably why the only other couple in the theater last night bailed on it about 20 minutes in (and might have left sooner but for the fact that they waited until after they were done eating their food from concessions to leave).

With regards to her father being a billionaire she addressed it in this interview.

For every movie that’s part of awards season, there’s often something weird that pops up. People want to tear everything down. There’s been this strange story going around that your dad is a billionaire in China and that you making this movie in the context of people who are struggling, is sort of unfair and hypocritical, I guess, in some way. Do you have anything to say about that? Or is it just a crazy rumor or something?

It’s fake news. It’s not true. My dad is not a billionaire, never has been. None of my family members are billionaires. I would have loved for them to pay off my student loan and my mortgage if that’s the case. You know, I think the last time I heard some rumors like that was probably at some Chinese tabloid because my dad married my stepmother, who is a comic actress in China. So, I think tabloids like to write stuff like that, but it’s so far from the reality of our lives. It’s kind of funny.
