Warner Bros. Won’t Share ‘Tenet’ Box Office Data, Angering Rival Studios

The studio, however, was concerned that reporters and rivals would misinterpret or unfairly analyze the results — leading to headlines that may incorrectly label “Tenet’s’ debut as a flop. Warner Bros. urged journalists to provide context by noting that ticket sales would automatically be lower than normal given the fact that theaters in major markets like New York and Los Angeles aren’t open and cinemas that have reopened have done so at reduced capacity.

In normal times, executives that are involved in distributing films get access to grosses by the hour. Studios work with the research company Rentrak and its parent company Comscore to report daily numbers and publish box office charts each weekend that are widely distributed across the entertainment industry. Studios pay a lot of money to get down-to-the-minute updates, with the agreement that rivals have access to info from other distributors.

According to individuals familiar with the situation, Rentrak had to get permission from major studio heads before concealing daily numbers for “Tenet.” Though executives were initially reluctant, they ultimately agreed for the first weekend as a courtesy, believing that Warner Bros. was taking a bold bet in testing the waters and needed their support.

With streaming rivals such as Netflix and Amazon keeping a tight grip on the number of times films are watched and refusing to reveal box office data about their films, more traditional studios have grown frustrated. Some studio executives have even publicly carped about the need to report grosses, suggesting they’d rather forgo the process all together.

Yeah comScore numbers are shielded but I don't think folks at that level won't know the numbers. I mean we have almost the numbers for two MTCs and we are way below what resources they have. Yeah cS isn't revealing numbers, but MTCs and other chains have their own numbers, which rival studios can easily get.

The concerning thing is last part. What if all studios follow it and who says they can't continue it in normalcy. Then as box office community we are fucked.

FWIW, as per our tracking, we have $2mn TENET 2nd Friday.

just change the forum name to Delay Theory. the only thing people are actually predicting these days is when movies are gonna get pushed to.

This name change was originally slated for Sep 26th but insider sources are indicating that it will soon be pushed to Dec 11.

But as “Tenet” continues into its second weekend in theaters, there has still been a dearth of information regarding box office data. The studio has yet to report daily figures, and is expected to wait until this Sunday to divulge ticket sales.

Guess this is the new normal to try avoiding potential bad press for the time being (although the shifting of release dates is already hinting the industry isn't happy with the results). It says in the article Sony won't be releasing any numbers for The Broken Hearts Gallery until Sunday as well.

If tenet can reach 30m by end of this week. This will suggest the movie has little drop from last holiday weekend, it wouldn't a total disaster then.

Mon cume 20.2 (WB est)

Tues-Th ~2-2.5M (keyser/Jat ests)
Th cume ~22.5

Last FSS ~9.4M (holiday boosted Sun, otherwise high 8s)

30 on Sun would be a 7.5 FSS, maybe ~15% drop post holiday adjustment.

I expect Sun about 29, ~6.5FSS, ~26% drop post holiday adjustment

Warner Bros & Sony Hiding Box Office Numbers From Rival Studios On ‘Tenet’ & ‘Broken Hearts Gallery’: Here’s Why

I am ok with WB unconventional way of  box office number reporting regularly when the world is running exceptionally abnormal.
