Nah, it's both. It's gonna take a non-linear approach and look at both Mufasa's backstory and be continuation of the previous film.

The fact that we’re getting a sequel (or prequel?) to that crappy 2019 film isn’t surprising, but they’re seriously getting Barry Jenkins to direct it? What’s next? Is Damien Chazelle going to direct the sequel to that 2017 Beauty and the Beast film that no one remembers?

Yeah, not so sure about WW but DOM it’ll drop like a rock. Maybe 50-60%.

On one hand it seems confounding that this is what would draw Jenkins to jump into the world of blockbusters already but on the other Disney already announced last year they were going all in on hiring more diverse talent (for their TV division but we know that extends to their movies too) and this is another big name in their pockets now so...

 

Lion King '19 was easily the most vanilla of all the Disney remakes so far but Moonlight and Beale Street were so great that it'll be interesting to see what he brings to this (a prequel? Probably don't even have to bet Regina King will voice Young Sarabi) so hopefully it works out for him.
