How is it possible for a crime thriller to be so boring? This was reportedly originally written in the early 90s and it shows: only the cast is what distinguishes it as a product of 2021. There's nothing here we haven't seen before (and done much better), as the whole movie just meanders along with astoundingly low energy levels and zero sense of urgency. Part of the problem is that John Lee Hancock, who is best known for making uplifting dramas (The Rookie, The Blind Side, Saving Mr. Banks), is the wrong person for the sort of material that someone like David Fincher has repeatedly done wonders with. As a result, he ends up squandering the talents of his three leads (Denzel, Malek, and Leto all give decent performances, but the script doesn't give them much in the way of actual characters to work with and find themselves hamstrung by Hancock's lethargic direction). It's the kind of movie that feels like it was made primarily to be watched as background noise while you do other stuff (despite having been originally conceived as a full-blown theatrical release). You can find better options for that than this. C

It can't be that bad, Jared Leto got a Golden Globe nomination for it!

He actually gives the best performance in this, if only because he at least tries to inject some life into it while Denzel and Rami just seem to be going through the motions from start to finish. Doesn't make his nomination any less goofy though.
