Dementeleus
22 minutes ago, grim22 said: #23 Reveal hidden contents The Way Back Have I watched it? Yes What is the plot? Alcoholic coach and former basketball star-player Ben Affleck returns to his alma-mater to coach at-risk teens to glory while trying to exorcise his own demons including alcoholism and a descent into loneliness. Actual Plot: Jack Cunningham was a high school basketball phenom who walked away from the game, forfeiting his future. Years later, when he reluctantly accepts a coaching job at his alma mater, he may get one last shot at redemption. I liked this movie, although saying "enjoyed this movie" is not possible as it is a hard watch with Affleck playing an alcoholic at the same time he was undergoing counseling for alcohol addiction in real life. The almost biographical nature of this movie is hard to overlook. A good job by both Affleck and Gavin O'Connor carry us through this movie. Tomatometer: 84% with 211 reviews Rankings: Appeared on 19 lists. Wasn't in the top 3 spots in any of them, but had decent widespread support. BOT User Reviews: this might be Ben's best performance. He goes through a wide range of emotions here and he's kind of brilliant in every scene. I know this is not the kind of film the academy will remember in 9 months, but his performance is good enough to be mentioned for 2020. It's a story about redemption, second and third chances and it lets us know that we never know what kind of influence we can have on an individual so try to live your best life as much as you can. 9/10 @baumer The script hits a lot of predictable beats, but O'Conner gives the film so much honesty and humanity that it overcomes that more often than it doesn't. Affleck's terrific in this, career-best work. @TMP Way too high. 2 1

NO What do I think the plot is then? 2 elf brothers go on a road-trip to find their father or something. There's also a blink and you miss it lesbian character whose lines can be cut in China and Russia. Actual Plot: Two elven brothers embark on a quest to bring their father back for one day. Nailed the plot at least. Pixar's lesser effort of 2020 ran smack into an unstoppable force at the box office called "The Covid-19 pandemic". Released 10 days before the US and the world effectively went into pause, the movie opened low and never recovered. One of the first movies to go from theatrical to Disney+ in record time, and a harbinger for the rest of 2020. Tomatometer: 88 with 330 reviews Rankings: Appeared on 19 lists, same as The Way Back, beat out The Way Back by 4 points overall. BOT User Reviews: Overall, a great film. Beautifully animated with lovable characters and an emotional ending. Love the magical themes, the quirkiness, the bond between the brothers, the adventure element. It's not the best Pixar movie but for me it was as entertaining as many in the top tier, and I love seeing original content from a studio that's relied too much on sequels in the past dedace. @HeatSeeker Way too low. 1 1 2

grim22
#21 Spoiler Another Round Have I watched it? NO What do I think the plot is then? The second movie on this list where I know nothing about it apart from the title. I am going to guess its about alcoholism and friendship. An alcoholic guy who hangs around at a bar and tells everyone his life story while they keep buying him more rounds. At the end, it is revealed in Usual Suspects style that he was making the entire thing up based on things around him in the bar. Actual Plot: Four friends, all high school teachers, test a theory that they will improve their lives by maintaining a constant level of alcohol in their blood. Got the alcohol part right, and this movie does sound interesting. Also, Mads is always good. Tomatometer: 92% with 161 reviews Rankings: 8 lists, 2 number 1 rankings, 6 top 5 rankings. The movie pretty much powered its way here on the back of really focused and strong support. BOT User Reviews: None, but @Rorschach was a big fan 5 2

grim22
Last one for the day #20 Spoiler Da 5 Bloods Have I watched it? YESNO. It was over 150 minutes and moved slowly, stopped it thinking I would get back to it but never did. Actual Plot: Four African-American vets battle the forces of man and nature when they return to Vietnam seeking the remains of their fallen squad leader and the gold fortune he helped them hide. Spike Lee's follow-up movie to BlackKklansman got great reviews but might have fallen prey to people not watching movies with a more serious tone or bent during the early pandemic days. Covid-19 was a cloud which hung over every movie this past year for the most part. From what I hear, Delroy Lindo and Chadwick Boseman are both great in it. Tomatometer: 92% with 291 reviews Rankings: This is the polar opposite of Another Round, appeared on a lot of lists - 39 to be exact, but it did not top any list and was in the top 5 in only 2 lists. Wide support but not strong support at all. BOT User Reviews: Loved just about everything here. Such a tremendous blend of genres with a lot of Lee's no-nonsense attitude. Don't think I ever saw anything Delroy Lindo was in before (I know), but he rocked it with every moment. His big hug and reconciliation with Norman especially hit me like a truck. @Eric Gardner 6 1 1
