Golden Globes/HFPA news thread (Breaking News: It Lives!)

Well, this escalated quickly. What is their problem exactly?

They've had multiple controversies the past several months, from lack of diversity in the HFPA to some members being pieces of garbage (that one dude they kicked out the other week for an email calling Black Lives Matter a "hate movement" was also accused by Brendan Fraser of sexual assault once).

They also need more actual journalists in the organization and less people only interested in hanging with A-list stars.

Seems like a big issue was the proposed membership changes:

Quote

Last week, the org released their plan for reform that included increasing the number of people of color in its ranks. The plan, which was approved on Thursday, also includes new restrictions on gifts that the members could receive and payments for work on their committees. 78 members voted in favor of the new guidelines, with three opposing. What ultimately made NBC pull the plug was the non-committal deadline that the HFPA refused to set for these changes. The network also demanded the the group not simply add 20 more members (as was also part of its original plan) but to double it with new members plus one, in effect giving new members a number leverage over the old.

I never took this show super seriously, it was a good party and publicity for contenders, but the whole enterprise has always been pretty shameless and the organization was dubious. Stars themselves would even call them out while they were onstage. So I guess the HFPA members didn't really take the complaints seriously this time, because they've always survived before when everyone knew about the bribes/gifts for nominations and wins, and still kept showing up for it. Also, the members not being American is probably a factor in them not really "getting" the social justice/representation issues at play.

Hollywood must really see the Globes as expendable, because they feel free to dunk on them openly and cut them loose. Awards bait mega-producer Scott Rudin "revealed" as a bully prone to violence? It was *crickets* from the A-list, for the most part...

The Globes are dead and Bennifer lives-what a time to be alive!

This is nothing that can't be fixed in a year. I love a good conspiracy theory. I'm telling you, there's more to this.

It's sad that Hollywood decided to cancel this fun award show, and that's what it is. HW just decided to cancel the Globes, why ...i don't know yet.

Yeah, Hollywood decided to END this award show. It's kinda sad that they say it's because of "diversity". That's just HW's excuse. It is problematic that they use a legit concern to excuse their wish to end this award show.

Maybr too many celebrities must have had bad dealings with them through the years, less on the show itself than behind the scenes. Now that the HFPA is down, the stars feel free to unload. Kind of like what you saw with Weinstein: hardly anyone ever liked him, even before his downfall.

The relationship between prestige movies and awards season is generally very symbiotic, but last year disrupted the whole ecosystem. The stars and the movies didn't get the same publicity boost these shows normally give them. Maybe some of them think awards shows are on their way out, so they're in a "Screw it," sort of mood. Maybe they think holding the Golden Globes to account on inclusion means they've done their part to improve diversity in Hollywood. Who knows? Of course the Globes shouldn't be racist, but why expect much from an organization so clearly lacking in integrity all along?

In NBC's official statement they said the next show will be in January 2023 so they didn't officially cancel it. With the studios (in other words, their "sponsors") dropping out they were left with no other choice but to scrap the telecast this year. The broken HFPA now has a year to get it together (and if they don't, well who knows maybe NBC will pay whatever to cut ties with them and seize complete control over the Golden Globes and rebrand).

Yeah, that seems strange they canceled a year in advance. The change can't be that hard to make. Makes me think there's more behind this.

Why are they trying to cancel this award show? It's always fun

Usually, you start with the word "money" - ratings were dreadful this year, but they've been on a downswing, like much of free and cable tv show ratings.  Combining award shows should hopefully help the ratings of the remaining televised one...

Interest in all awards shows has been in a free-fall for years and years so whatever pre-text there is to end them is a good one. Awards are outdated way of validation that most people dismiss so why broadcast them? Just give them quietly among the industry.

HFPA had a reputation for being clowns since forever. It's laughable that Hollywood waited this long to turn on them so they shouldn't be applauded for being late half a century or longer.

Right now, BAFTA (minus that idiotic jury) is the only precursor that shows accuracy when it comes to Oscars. SAG is ruined by AFTRA clowns so their picks are off and Critics Choice are HFPA Lite.

Just take all awards off TV. Maybe Oscars go streaming but that's it.

Award shows are pretty meaningless anyways. The Audience decide what the best movie is with their wallets. If someone tells you the Hurt Locker is a better movie than Avatar, shakespeare in love is better than Saving Private Ryan or The Reader was a better movie than TDK, you'd laugh in their face.

Award shows are now the hipster shows so its no surprise people are fed up with watching
