Alpha Posted June 6, 2021 Author Share Posted June 6, 2021 Mighty Fall This year felt like a many a CAYOM trend running its course, and I feel that applies to the space opera as well. However, that didn't stop me from getting excited to read Mighty Fall based on its premise alone: Looney Tunes-esque characters alongside live-action counterparts in a standard CAYOM space opera? That would either be a glorious mess or a pairing for the ages. However, was this film actually does ended up being a bit of a disappointment for me. Maybe it's my fault for getting hyped for something this film wasn't trying to be, but Mighty Fall feels a lot like...if Reddit tried to reverse-engineer the Looney Tunes, and came to the conclusion that Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck didn't become such enduring cartoon characters because they were funny, but because they were cool and did badass things. As such, we get a lot of edgy James Gunn quips in place of the trademark slapsticks in the lookalike characters of Trudar and Grath, which in my opinion is such a fatal misreading of what makes Bugs and Daffy such iconic characters that it kinda breaks the film for me. "This is what the filmmakers should've been done instead" is a bad form of criticism but this time I can't resist: put Bugs and Daffy in classic form with their usual antics alongside gritty live-action space opera characters and you could actually have something really funny and engaging, a legendary spoof of CAYOM's most popular genre. Instead, this ends up mostly being a mishmash of genre tropes done better in films like Spark and Scavenger Wars with cartoon characters that just don't belong in this universe. 5 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Alpha Posted June 7, 2021 Author Share Posted June 7, 2021 (edited) The Castaways I dunno, man. It's not very long, I'll give it that, but there's no story here. It's a jumble of okay-ish action sequences and thinly-written quip machines for characters, and that's pretty much it. I know its creator wants some more constructive feedback for this and I don't want to stoop down to "Not for Me" criticism, but I'd honestly say the only things I could talk about at length are the grammar and word choice, which I found to be very hard to understand at times (try reading aloud the sentences you write and see if they make as much sense as they do on the page). Other than that, The Castaways really failed to make much of an impression. My thoughts on this one are basically Ethan's. And if you couldn't hear that mid-credits scene, it's because all you could hear was the loud sound of me going "UGGGGGGGGGGGH." Alpha Posted June 7, 2021 Author Share Posted June 7, 2021 Christmas Shopping This film resonated with a lot of reviewers this year but unfortunately it just didn't quite bring out the festive cheer in me even when I first read it during the holiday season. A lot of this is because for a Noah Baumbach film, I felt like his exploration of familial dysfunction just wasn't as strong as it was in his other films. This felt more like a Hallmark Christmas movie that's 50% stuff that doesn't quite work like Joan Cusack yelling into a tree ornament, 45% scenes of shopping that captures the more enervating things about the Christmas season, and 5% Adam Driver. My original review for this was kinda the same and even revisiting it after some of the praise, aside from some classic moments of Baumbach awkwardness it didn't warrant much more than a shrug. 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
