Would require big budgets and anything produced has a high chance of looking like a poor man's Avatar.

I think the phrase "library built over the last century" is exaggereated, since MGM sold it's pre 1986 library (including the UA fillms MGM got when MGM and UA merged in 1981,with a few exceptions like the Bond franchise)) to Truner in 1986; that is gone forever.
