BOT Top 150 Animated Films Countdown begins...

Recommended Posts

81st – The Adventures of Tintin

214 points – 14 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 83rd

2016 –109th

2018 – Not in Top 100

My personal ranking – Never Seen – Apparently I just don’t really care for Belgian Comics

Tintin makes its return to the top 100 for the first time since 2014 to the delight of… I’m guessing about 14 people. It also makes the top 6 for films that I have never seen, so that is something for it to put on the poster.

80th – Despicable Me

216 points – 13 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 51st

2016 –47th

2018 – 77th

My personal ranking – 72nd – I still enjoy it.

Another big franchise from a non-Disney/Japan studio in a slump, although a large part of this drop occurred in the time between 2016 and 2018 as opposed to the previous 3 years.

The film that launched the Minion phenomenon for better or for worse. Will it continue to retain top 100 status next time out?

79th – Onward

217 points – 13 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – Not Eligible

2016 –Not Eligible

2018 – Not Eligible

My personal ranking – 68th – A rare Pixar film where the 3rd act is the strongest part.

That’s not even me being snarky. Pixar films (even the great ones) can tend to not quite end as strongly as the rest of the film that preceded it. This film however starts fine enough, the middle then gets a bit better, and then finally the ending is top tier.

With a strong-ish debut appearance on this list, it will be interesting to see how it moves from here in 2023 when it has to deal with some weird fish boys shouting at Bruno.

78th – Batman: Mask of the Phatasm

227 points – 12 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 87th

2016 –135th

2018 – 88th

My personal ranking – Never seen – I assume a phantasm is what Dan Ackroyd felt in that one scene in Ghostbusters.

And now it is time for the classic hipster choice for best Batman film (true heroes die on the Adam West hill). Phantasm did have a slight blip in 2016, but outside of that has been pretty steady hovering around 80th place.

I maybe should watch this one day, but I saw Killing Joke instead which is a 40 minute build up to Batgirl boinking Batman before it randomly remembers it is a Batman film.

77th – Raya and the Last Dragon

229 points – 14 votes ( 1 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – Not Eligible

2016 –Not Eligible

2018 – Not Eligible

My personal ranking – 96th – I’d like to think that this also gets better appreciated with time.

The newest Disney film on the list, which is not a big shock considering it is the newest eligible film for the whole countdown. Raya and the last Dragonbender is a film that for me, took a while to get going yet once it was in full flow, I actually found pretty endearing and enjoyable.

It just snuck into my own top 100 so whether it can stay there next time around is up for debate. It is possible it may struggle to be a long term top 100 film.

76th – I Lost My Body

234 points – 13 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – Not Eligible

2016 –Not Eligible

2018 – Not Eligible

My personal ranking – Not in Top 100 – I mean, it’s just a pretty dull 60 minute long moany French film that randomly has 20 minutes of Thing origin story spliced into it because why not.

I do apologise for the comment above. I am sure this film is animation genius and I should feel ashamed for not getting it. But that is the nature of subjectivity, 13 of you have to be wrong. J

The film definitely adds more variety of style, story, and slanguage to the countdown and it got so much support that even a heretic like me decided to try it out. So that is a victory in itself.

75th – The Princess and the Frog

234 points – 14 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 71st

2016 –50th

2018 – 79th

My personal ranking – Not in Top 100 – The last truly bad WDAS film released in cinemas.

Yeah, I am not a fan of this one at all. Yes, it was the last great hurrah of hand drawn animation and it has a couple of decent songs, but in my eyes it was bad when it released and it feels worse with every far superior release that has followed it.

As for general thoughts, it does appear that this film is destined to always be in the 70s somewhere outside of that one upward blip in 2016.

74th – Isle of Dogs

234 points – 14 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – Not Eligible

2016 –Not Eligible

2018 – Not Eligible

My personal ranking – Not in Top 100 – It was kind of okay in places I suppose… hey, that makes it by far Wes Anderson’s best film then.

A debut appearance in this list is a safe top 100 finish for Isle of Dogs. It is a film that I watched, was not overly impressed by, and then forgot about all in quick succession, but clearly there is some support out there as it is the top finisher in the three way tiebreak for 74th place.

73rd – Hunchback of Notre Dame

235 points – 15 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 43rd

2016 –63rd

2018 – 42nd

My personal ranking – 25th – And we go from a film I personally feel is criminally overplaced to one that I feel is criminally underplaced

So, yet another Disney film showing a big drop on previous years and sadly it is one of my favourites this time. (It also has one of the absolute best Disney songs ever).

Like with a lot of the Disney output post Lion-King and pre… whatever the fuck was happening in the Brother Bear, Chicken Little, Home on the Range era, Hunchback feels like it gets more credit as a film as time passes and as such I was a little surprised to see it drop as it did.

This is probably a sign that its time as a top 50 player may be over.

72nd – Tarzan

237 points – 13 votes ( 1 top 5, 1 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 34th

2016 –56th

2018 – 59th

My personal ranking – Not in Top 100 – Not I still appreciate it, just not quite top 100 level.

And straight after Hunchback comes another post-renaissance output from Disney. Tarzan boasts one of the most Phil Collinsian soundtracks of any animated film and that clearly divided audiences a little.

I know that some may decry that this is almost in the top 70, but to those I say, “It used to be 34th! The world is clearly healing.”

71st – A Bug’s Life

240 points – 19 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 45th

2016 –54th

2018 – 63rd

My personal ranking – 84th – It seems I may not be alone in placing this film in my top 100, but just not that high.

19 votes. Nothing else has received more than 15 yet which is a strong sign of how much A Bug’s Life is a film that everyone kinda likes, but nobody loves. It would be my hypothesis that if I had limited people to a maximum of 50 votes each, this may have dropped off a cliff in the tally up.

We haven’t seen a lot of Pixar films so far, especially compared to its Disney sibling. Makes you wonder if we are about to a John Williams level run at the tail end of this countdown?

75th – The Princess and the Frog

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 71st

2016 –50th

2018 – 79th

My personal ranking – Not in Top 100 – The last truly bad WDAS film released in cinemas.

I usually find WDAS to be overrated on this list, but The Princess And The Frog is an exception. I saw it for this list and it was surprisingly good, one of the few WDAS to be too low, I personally have it as the second best WDAS ever.

70th – Kubo and the Two Strings

246 points – 15 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – Eligible

2016 –107th

2018 – 50th

My personal ranking – 15th – Yeah, it’s a masterpiece in my eyes

For me, this is hands down the best stop-motion film ever made. I know that others will very much disagree (I mean this list disagrees).

This is Kubo’s third bow in a list and it is a pretty steep drop also after a good increase the list before. It is a shame for me to think that this may be another great animation from a smaller studio that is going to fade away over the next few lists.

69th – Whisper of the Heart

247 points – 9 votes ( 3 top 5, 1 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – Not in top 100

2016 –106th

2018 – 71st

My personal ranking – 44th – I really nice and lovely film if lacking a little something.

Another film that I watched for the first time in the past month and another film that I really enjoyed although not as strongly as at least 4 voters here did. Is this also a rare Ghibli film that is actually an original story?

The biggest scoring film with less than 10 votes by so much it hurts. The next highest scoring film with single digit votes is a full 60 points below this - that is insane. Feels like a film that has even more scope to climb in this list as a good number of people who see it, love it.

68th – Coraline

250 points – 14 votes ( 0 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – 39th

2016 –48th

2018 – 43rd

My personal ranking – Not in Top 100 – Gave this a try, though it was pretty damn bad.

Yeah, I didn’t get the love for this. The story felt silly and the voice acting was mostly awful for me. I didn’t really appreciate the big titty tassle old women either, or the friend, or Coraline, or well anyone.

It has taken a big fall in the general list also as this is the first time it has missed the top 50. (I feel like I have said this so many times that we must be due a couple of big climbers soon also.)

67th – Porco Rosso

251 points – 15 votes (  1 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – Not in top 100

2016 –90th

2018 – Not in top 100

My personal ranking – Not Seen – It is now close to the top of my Ghibli to watch list now though.

I wasn’t expecting the comment at the end of the last installment to come true so quickly. Porco Rosso has gained big in this installment of the list as it rises a minimum of 34 places since the last installment.

I should give this a watch as it might be the best film about a pig going to war.

66th – The Tale of Princess Kaguya

265 points – 12 votes ( 3 top 10 )

2013 – Not in Top 25

2014 – Not in top 100

2016 –75th

2018 – 85th

My personal ranking – 45th – A surprisingly good film with a wonky ending.

I admit that I was put off watching this because of the animation style, and then I finally get around to watching it, and yeah, it was a very strong film.

The anti-princess film, it has a lot of great character and moments. But, I do also kind of think that the 3rd act goes a little of the rails (even if that is technically Japan’s fault, not the studio’s).

This is also the second film in a row to finally have a big increase from its previous outing.

65th – Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

271 points – 16 votes ( 2 top 10 )

2013 –23rd

2014 – 21st

2016 –35th

2018 – 24th

My personal ranking – Not in Top 100 – A classic and one of the most important films ever made. But, not quite top 100 for me anymore.

Well it was a nice run of films increasing while it lasted, hey? Now we see a film that has been a constant member of the top 25 club and it misses the top 50 completely. I’ll admit that this shocked me quite a bit as I thought that Snow White would easily make top 50 at worst because it is Snow White.

Turns out nothing is sacred anymore.
