There's a China thread with people who are very good at predicting its results you know. Everyone knew that The Wandering Earth would win Chinese New Year despite lower presales and that it would be huge, to say something.

You can't be very good at predicting China results unless you have super-powers, those people in China thread can be right about one movie, but very wrong about 10 others, the final result there is often very different from what people predict.

what the hell are you talking about? Why are you calling me an "Alita hater"? I watched Alita last week and loved it.

and Charlie Jatinder im pretty sure works in the industry he seems pretty objective with his posts generally..

I haven't seen a single positive post from you and Charlie about Alita, all you post here is negative stuff about the movie, ignoring all good things. It doesn't look objective or that you liked the movie at all.

Wandering earth PS picking up. Its rev% now over show%.  Lets see if it can go from 4th to 1st.  It has previews on monday to get WoM going

I'm sure the pre-sales thread has more. Gavin was very optimistic since the very beginning also.

Random predictions here and there don't mean that "everyone knew". The reason it exploded is that it got the best reviews by far from all the CNY releases. That is impossible to predict two weeks in advance. Nobody predicted Venom or Aquaman would do as well as they did.

Just like any country, China has specific tastes and we can't say how well Alita will do until Chinese moviegoers go and see it.

...? Have we gotten some new data that is negative? Otherwise I don't get this wave of people doubling down on the bomb/flop comments, which are looking pretty awkward.

In Avatree's "defense", maybe some people have missed this but he's probably the biggest change of heart after seeing the film, and has been praising it quite a bit. Which is, the general outcome we want from the US audience that has been overly harsh on this movie before release.

These last few posts feel reminiscent of the 30% RT days, but without the data to back them up. 😒

I'll vouch for tree, I've discussed the movie with him and how we disagree on it. He's no hater, just a realist.

Claiming many times that the movie is a bomb without final BO results has nothing to do with "being realist". It's doing good so far, it's way too early to make any judgement.

Why is the realist guy ignoring Alita's strong presales?

The movie launched 3rd in the UK, behind the second week of How to Train Your Dragon and the Lego Movie 2. There's some ACTUAL results that show it isn't likely to be a huge hit.

It is first in Taiwan and now HK, second in SK behind local mega-hit. "Huge hit" is relative but it is doing alright.

You can't trust the UK, football didn't even come home.

First, position in chart doesn't matter. Second, just one market doesn't matter unless it's US or China, and it didn't even bomb in UK, it just did alright. Third, Alita did 32 mln from only 11 markets (some of them didn't even have wide opening yet), and Lego Movie 2 did 18 mln from 63! markets, just to tell you how dumb your comparison is.

We're comparable when it comes to box office unlike a lot of nations. Christ, if it follows our lead in the US, it performs higher than my personal expectation. You're right, until there's a US number then we're all pissing in the wind, but at least it doing £2.2m in the UK is a tangible number that can be extrapolated for the US launch.

This comparison is even more pathetic. The largest OS gross The Lego franchise has is 211 mil.

Also a 3 mil opening weekend in the UK terrible.

Maybe in general (need to check), but there are always exceptions. MPR did almost twice as much as Aquaman in the UK!

Also, Alita got horrific reviews in the British press which can't have helped.

Lego 2 is a bomb, it's not even a discussion. My point was that if movie did worse in one market, it doesn't mean it did as bad in all other markets.

That's because Mary Poppins is a British centric brand. Every country has outliers.

A 3 million 3 day weekend in UK suggests anywhere between 20-25M 3 day weekend in USA. Could go lower if luck is real shit.

Am I the only one that thinks it's funny that every time they try to quote that UK number they make it smaller and snaller?
