He won't be affected much from this. It's not like Star power is a thing nowadays barring few. Even Ryan Reynolds is not a draw beside Deadpool.  Free guy is coming to bomb even if it's good.

It is not about star power but performance. There are lots of bad movies in the world but bad not because of the actors.. i would argue this movie is bad cause of Henry Golding.. Not kidding.

He will not be affected maybe for romance films. But i doubt he will be cast for any action films or any films which require solid acting. His weaknesses in terms of action and acting is literally served to the world on a silver platter here.

Have you seen the film? If not, i think it is too early for you to say.

The marketplace is looking worse than it was when F9 released in most of its markets (May). I'm not sure if October will actually be worse but MGM might not want to be in a position again where it is a month before release, and the situation is a lot worse.

I think NTTD case is more difficult.

This movie is totally losting it's timing, it was supposed to come out in 2019, the first trailer even came out in 2019. It's actually the first movie victim of COVID and it's still not out.

At this point they lost so much money delaying this already very expensive movie that i can't see they're doing it again. This would have to gross a billion to have a profit and God knows when this will happen again.

I suppose every country dealing with a new wave right now will be better in October, but if not, i can see they accepting a deal with a streaming service to release day and date or close after theatrical release.

We get it, you didn’t like him in that movie.

SJ2 dropping as it did really surprised me. Of course that and BW have streaming/plague on their bingo blame card.

Curious to see the next few weekends. TSS, you in danger girl…

Maybe instead of firing another boner Rocket into space, Amazon should be saving their pennies for NTTD?

They really should if things are bad foreign in October

I bet they would accept to pay 200M to have this premiering on theaters on October and then on Prime Video by November. This way MGM can at least get what they spend back.

Specialists are saying the new wave will start to peak in US by late August - early September so this is in a bad spot.

At the same time i don't think theaters will shut down or anything so i don't see they're delaying it, but considering Delta will hurt it at some degree domestically and things will still be bad foreign, i'm inclined to think PA is more likely than not.

If only more people in the US would get vaccinated.

C+ is a bit better than I was expecting for Old. Could imagine some people hating it and others loving it.

Wow thats some strong overreaction here, how about we  see friday numbers first ?that seems good too me.If i was to give my opinion if deadlines numbers hold then they are ok i guess if any of you were in the tracking thread you would know that the ow for the newcomers were expected and also are we really suprised that movies with that low interest and reception do bad ? I guess no as for black widow and space jam IF the numbers for them hold which i doubt as fast 9 made 11,t ml from a lower thursday number than black , it would be dissapointing but not unexpected black widow is a movie that belongs to the lower tier of the mcu and a movie that was pirated like hell and space jam is also a movie that had a lot of fun rush and an average reception at best.If the other holdovers like fast 9 hold well then i doubt that covid was the reason for these numbers imo only if all the movies have bad holds then and only then we maybe  can attribute it to covid. As for the rest of the comments it seems like a classical meltdown to me sometimes bad numbers are bad numbers and theres isnt anything else to them ,blaming covid everytime a movie doesnt perform as expected seems ridiculous to me.As for the covid situation are people really suprised ? after more than a year ? Cases will drop and will increase from time to time its how things will be as long as the pandemic last ,people need to accept and imo stop being suprised ,i personally doubt that the fall and winter will be as bad as some people are making out to be ,cases will be higher by then but so will be the vaccination status.Anyways its all guesses at this point based with 0 information ,we know that cases will increase however the question is how the goverments will react to it and based from what i am seeing and with vaccinations rising i doubt that a worldwide lockdown or a country lockdown will happen again

Blaming actors for failure of movie nowadays is arbitrary. Considering even The Rock is gonna give big flop next weekend and we all know his acting skills.

The Rock has charisma.

Henry Golding used to be a TV show host. I suppose that doesn't disqualify him from being a good actor, but he was the worst one in CRA and hasn't done anything to change that perception since.

No, you just need to get the balls to ban antivaxxers. Treating them like they have a valid point of view is political and moronic.

How many times do we need to say piracy and PA is killing BW? Also does anyone really care about GI Joe? And for those that do, what do they think of a minority actor headlining it? And Golding is a bad actor as well.

Space Jam acted more like a fanboy movie than a family one. There are a lot more explanations.

Umm...I agree with you on the first part? I hate antivaxxers with every fiber of my being, but I have no control over what they do and their impacts on others. Not sure why you are calling for me to ban antivaxxers when the only power I have is with this forum. Please stop with this "holier than thou" schtick you possess.

I also agree with you on all the things you listed for Widow and Snake Eyes and Space Jam (outside of Golding being a bad actor. I've been pushing him as the next Bond for a while). In fact, if you read what you just quoted there, you know that I find the reasons you mentioned valid. However, I do think Delta is playing a part in these bad numbers, even if it's not the main one, and I don't see why I can't believe this stuff is an issue in tandem with the other stuff people are parroting out.

Disney more or less pulling out of Cinema Con in person at the end of August should give people a clear indication that Shang Chi either wont stay in that Early September date or it will go to hybrid theaters and Disney+ release. If its delayed then all Marvel Movies (and maybe other Disney stuff too) will be pushed back imo.

Anyone who thinks it will just be a theater release in September now is just fooling themselves and that includes NATO even after their little hissy fit last week.

Of course, it will be interesting how the contract with theaters for that film was written and if they have recourse if (okay, forget if, it's probably when) Disney screws them again...

It's amazing, every time you step away from this thread for a few hours you come back to a complete freak out session and theaters are dead and every movie is moving and COVID will destroy everything.

Sheesh people.

The Delta variant is little more than a head cold for anyone that has been vaccinated and isn't old or full of comorbid issues.  Even for the youth that haven't been vaccinated it is almost completely devoid of serious cases.

Yet here we are 18 months after the start of a pandemic and people want to shut everything down again and freak out despite the actual numbers that matter holding low.  Already in England the downward slope has begun for this variant.  People have lost their damn minds.

Agree. At some point in the near future we need to ignore how many Covid cases there are. When everyone over 12 has been offered a vaccine and had their chance i can`t see why all the rest of us should care “about them” anymore. They made their choice. Now they have to learn to live(or die) with it.

Here in Denmark there have not been a death in 8 days now and only unvaccinated people are hospitalized. Still box office is under 50% pre Covid

Yeah if you look at the UK it seems pretty clear that we’ll be back on the downswing by mid-Late Sep as delta burns itself out of unvaccinated targets. Nothing small-medium will probably need to move, and nothing already going day and date.

If they do decide they need to do something about Shang chi if it ends up basically smack on the delta peak:

make it PA (depends on contracts how possible this is/exact penalties)

Move it to early Feb (5 movies 2022 )

Move it to Eternals slot and Eternals to Feb

There’s room in 2022 to not do another full slate delay.

People should fight Covid-19 with mass vaccination or mask mandate, not by closing the business or put them below full productivity.  Don't forget that saving livelihood is almost as important as saving life

No Time to Die relies heavily on European box office. If theaters in Europe are closed or if people aren’t going then it us screwed. Moving it would not be a bad idea especially considering next year is the 60th anniversary of the franchise

The other option is stagger the rollout if they're confident about reception and delay VoD until after Christmas
