Warner Bros. fired up James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad last night, the studio’s first Thursday preview in a long time arguably since pre-pandemic; the DC R-rated ensemble seeing $4.1M; the biggest for a R-rated movie during the pandemic. As per WarnerMedia’s pandemic plan, The Suicide Squad is playing in both theaters and in homes on HBO Max. The Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker’s take on the DC movie has the best reviews out of the franchise at 93% certified fresh, besting the critical response to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (26% Rotten) and Birds of Prey (79% certified fresh), putting projections at a minimum of $30M domestic, $70M WW.

I'm satisfied, this is WAY better than what it's looking few days ago, it seems the walkups are pretty good.

Now let's hope this trend continues for the entire weekend, i would love to see the 7 - 7.5M friday estimate based on tracking becoming 9.5-10M on actual numbers.

This guy Deadline Anthony has got to be joking right? He can't make up his mind.

Disney’s No. 1 title The Jungle Cruisedespite being available in homes, actually beat the first week of pre-pandemic grosses of Dwayne Johnson’s 2018 action pic Rampage, with an estimated $49.7M at 4,310 theaters to $45.6M, which clearly indicates there’s an appetite for theatrical and that headlines about the delta variant aren’t preventing people from going to the movies.  The question, of course, is how much more Jungle Cruise would have made without competition from Disney+ Premier

7-7.5 True Fri would probably be about 23-24M. 10M True Fri is about what you’d want to feel good about 30M. I suppose it’s not literally impossible but it would need extremely good walkups.

Analysts believe that “The Suicide Squad” will generate more than $30 million in its opening weekend. The film carries a hefty $185 million price tag, so normally that kind of launch would be a disappointment. But, hey, we’re living in plague times. In this kind of atmosphere, that ranks as a hit.

30M or 25M are both not good results for this box office wise so nothing to get excited about. Another sacrifice from WB for temporary HBO Max growth that won’t do them any good in the long term since they don’t plan on keeping this release strategy for the near future.

Every weekend he have a meltdown, it's becoming funny.

Sure dude, people being comfortable at theater drop 10% in a month but sure Delta isn't a thing, whatever suits your narrative is fine.

Yeh they’ve been doing that recently though. Even last weekend with Jungle Cruise:

”In normal times, a $35m start for a $200m budgeted Disney film would be a disaster” etc.

Every film that’s released since last August has been a sacrifice thanks to Rona.

I won't say this is impossible but 9.5-10 would need much better walkups than those seen yesterday. Thursday walkups were definitely good but not out of this world.

Regardless of how TSS open, pretty much it is up to what WB want to believe. They may seriously consider this as a sign that HBO max impact on their box office return OR they think is theater is dead and therefore HBO max is their future.....Nobody know what is in their mind.

what i dont want to see is people blaming solely covid for ss ow, when your holdovers do great, when a movie that had zero hype (jungle cruise) opened to 35 mill and when GvK or MK had ow 31 and 24 mill respectevely in an enviroment that was way worse than it is now then no you cant say that  covid was the biggest reason for ss ow .....
