SHANG-CHI WEEKEND THREAD | NO SPOILERS | 75.38M 3-Day, 94.67M 4-Day. Record for Labor Day! | Tony Leung saved the theater! | Get Vaccinated and Wear a mask.

This is an excellent number for Shang Chi. Fabulous news for the movie industry and a relief to movie theater lovers.

Disney was spot on with their BW estimate and many thought it may be low balled too. According to Keyser in the tracking thread, barring walk ups making up the difference, the Sunday estimate may be right on the money as well.

Low balled or not, this movie is the triumph of the summer (caveat: BW was expected to do very well). For a little known super hero to explode on to the scene this way must be gratifying for everyone associated with it. That’s something to celebrate for sure.

So you better pray this will not turn into a 74m 3 days opening, which means "To the hell with you":,

Damn, disney must be trying hard now to avoid a 74m 3 days for a freaking chinese-centric film, which may spill a whole bad luck for the rest of the SC's run or even MCU.

This feels like a record that will hold long too; don’t see Labor Day weekend becoming a regular release date for blockbusters considering how this really only happened because of the pandemic and needed space between the other marvel movies this year

Any ideas why minorities are boosting Marvel and theaters in general lately?

Because the younger the demo, the more minority share in the population, in fact minority race made up >50% of the population below 18 in America and younger demo has been force of moviegoing, which completely falsify the myth that brick and mortar theater are for old crowd.

Just like Guardians cemented first weekend of August I think this will be a new coveted date unless Shang-Chi has horrible legs (... it won't). Makes sense considering how many superhero films are getting made.

51% of audience were under 25. When other franchises keep ageing, MCU keep adding the newer gen.

That's the key of MCU sequels increasing when others drop off. Add more fans. Younger fans.

I am legit off to a second showing with my nine year old nephew and his friend. He wanted to see it!

It's not that they are boosting per se - it's that the white demo is disproportionately staying home vs pre-2020.  So, minorities are making up higher percentages of the in person audience, especially b/c if you exclude 50+, they make up an actual higher percent of potential audience (and 50+ are not attending theaters).

I posted a few days ago, those showing up since March 2020 are male, young, and diverse.  Nothing about this open changes that much, even with the MCU label, except that all the numbers are higher, but they still skew all the same way...
