Cliffs:

Late 2023 or 2024 release date

Nolan wanted a 90-120 day window. The final window isn't known, but it's not Uni's standard 17/31 days.

Nolan has final cut.

Nolan has a backend deal.

Universal is under a 3 week blackout period like WB was and can't schedule other films close to this.

The subject matter wasn't commercial enough for some other studios.

It also sounds like the relationship between him and WB had indeed become rocky even before the HBO Max mess given how viciously he attacked it by calling them "the worst streaming service" (lmao oh poor forgotten-even-when-it-was-alive Quibi) following the 2021 announcement. Gonna guess there was a lot of The Blame Game that went around after Tenet's failed release during the worst of the pandemic. Oh well, maybe they'll kiss and make up in a few years when everyone that was running the studio in 2020 is unlikely to be there anymore.

He might’ve had some bitterness over how WB handled the Justice League debacle.

Yeah, well...he's still considered the heftiest filmmaker in Hollywood, despite the recent misstep of TENET.

The question is, did one of the other studios offer more for less, i.e. offer him an even better deal if they could go streaming/simultaneous with it?  Paramount+ would have loooooooved to have the exclusive license on the new Nolan...however, who knows if Paramount+ will still be around in 2023/2024?

P.S.  I still haven't seen TENET.  😂

This is supposed to begin shooting in early 2022 so if it were to be ready on time it could easily be positioned for an awards-friendly date in the fall/holiday season, but Universal will already have their hands full in terms of awards pushes between Spielberg's The Fabelmans and the Carey Mulligan/Zoe Kazan movie about the reporters who took down Weinstein, so sometime in the second half of 2023 seems most likely.

But will it last the full 100 if it's not a hit?

This is just supposed to be a standard biography or is Nolan twisting it?

Its not about how long it will last. Just that it cannot be released on streaming platform for 100 days. That is nothing compared what we used to have pre COVID when big movies used to hit digital sales between 4-6 months.

I think this 100 days to any other release though (SVOD, PVOD, DVD etc) which 100 days+ hadn't been the norm for some time. Most I think were around 75 days until digital release on iTunes/Amazon etc. and 90 days until physical.

Also will be significantly longer than most Uni films (17-31 days) which judging by the remarks in the article seems like they are keeping that release structure.

So Nolan is ditching Warner? Obviously it's very minor in the grand scheme of things, but it's another example of the pandemic turning the world upside down. Nolan seemed like he could be a WB lifetime guy, similar to Eastwood or Kubrick. I guess we will see how this project goes. The Paul Newman & John Cusack movie on this subject is pretty dang solid.

AT&T screwed Warner Studios but it has been on a decline even in Tsujihara timeframe. Nolan has already loudly said what he thought of AT&T decision to go direct to streaming and ridiculed HBO Max as the worst streaming service :-)

Many years ago, Nolan lost people at WB that he trusted like Alan Horn & Jeff Robinov. But the pandemic & HBO Max situation really imploded his relationship with the WB executives. Interesting report in Variety that WB still wanted to work with him on this Oppenheimer thing, even after his very harsh criticism of the HBO Max strategy.
