I really hope they capture the sense of impending doom that was felt though much of the USA early in the war. It is so difficult to capture it given everyone knows how it ends, but if the USA had any other option - or if they were the only nation developing such weapons - than obvious they would have opted against the use of the nukes which is now widely condemned. They probably saved 500k more lives than the nukes killed by using them.

So much cinematic potential still untapped w/ the US roll in WW2. The Manhattan Project and a (real) movie about Pearl Harbor could be big critical and commercial hits if well done. Nolan is basically tackling subject #1.

Considering how much Pearl Harbour made in Japan I think it will make more than nothing.

Source on the Pearl Harbour Japan numbers: https://variety.com/2001/film/box-office/pearl-harbor-scores-japan-hit-1117850186/#!

My post was sarcasm, but that said:

1) Pearl Harbor was the most hyped film of summer 2001 and had an all-time great marketing campaign. It opened huge everywhere.

2) Japan remembers Pearl Harbor a bit better than it remembers Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I suspect.

EXCLUSIVE: In what would be the first major piece of casting since officially confirming Oppenheimer will be his next film, Christopher Nolan looks to have found Cillian Murphy a co-star to join him in what is believed to be an all-star ensemble. Sources tell Deadline that Emily Blunt is in talks to join Murphy in the Universal tentpole that Nolan will write and direct. Sources say she will play the wife of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy), the scientist who ran the Manhattan Project that led to the invention of the atomic bomb. The film will bow on July 21, 2023, a slot typically saved for Nolan films in the past.

Having just worked with Murphy on A Quiet Place Part II was no doubt an influence in this casting decision. Happy to see Emily stepping outside the Disney/Krasinski comfort zone that's been her primary residence in recent years to work with someone of Nolan's caliber.
