Eternals Weekend Thread: 71M OW DOM, 90M OS | Dune 7.6M (-50%), NTTD 6.2M, Venom 4.5M, Spencer 2.1M

Some people are really losing it in this thread. Wow! Anyway, I’m going to see Eternals tonight. Every movie studio has its hits and misses. Was bound to happen for the MCU too. Relax! The box office numbers aren’t even bad. It’s not the movie’s fault that some people were ready to crown it “the first 100 mil opener of the pandemic era”.

So, speaking of the Nov 12 spot and this weekend's opens...one of my 2 Cinemarks (the one which does fewer foreign films) has just now booked the CS Lewis limited release on a full screen for presales...so we'll see how limited that one ends up still being next weekend as this weekend and the next weekdays play out...

Exactly.

People are actiing like 70m OW is a flop because they drank the 100+m OW kool aid.

Why would a ponderous movie with D-list superheroes open higher than Venom 2?

Could this see an OW in the 60s?

FWIW the theater I'm seeing it at later today has a lot of seats still open for most shows throughout the entire day. Guess we'll have to see what the walkup business is like.

Because a non-ponderous movie with Z-list superheroes opened higher than Venom 2 in 2014. :Venom:

Even Halle Berry's Catwoman there's people who are nostalgic for it.

My little sister LOVES that movie. The 5 year olds that caught Catwoman on TV and enjoyed it are now adults with a nostalgia itch.

I was just about to say, Yeh. Halle Berry has even noticed all the Catwoman love recently:

167k likes lol. Another of a female artist is in the costume got 216k likes.

I’ve always loved Catwoman. It fits in with Showgirls & Glitter for me. I love a camp, messy classic. Glad Catwoman has found its, now adult, audience haha

All back to the typical marvel formula with one linear storytelling which is easy to digest (can turn off the brain and enjoy the movie), full of  nonstop action + typical marvel joke.

Problem solve.

True but at some point that formula will wear thin as most do..    What the MCU had going before was major star power performances that became iconic but also led towards something grander and we had never really seen that before.

The new batch of releases fair or not don't have the same wow factor of Downey Jr. as Tony or Thanos the big bad in the shadows..

Of course they aren't dead but challenges for the MCU will happen. No longer easy street.

Well, at this point in the pandemic, it can't be considered good to make less than production budget in your overall DOM box office, especially as a full theatrical release...if this keeps dropping, per Deadline's thoughts, and ends up in the high 60's, that's almost a certainty from the open...
