Eternals Weekend Thread: 71M OW DOM, 90M OS | Dune 7.6M (-50%), NTTD 6.2M, Venom 4.5M, Spencer 2.1M

I wont get a chance to watch Eternals in theaters, so will refrain from a review of my own. That said, I have never had an MCU that my social media circles are just tearing apart.... on both sides of the social and political spectrums. Its very confusing lol the few friends that enjoy the arthouse side were actually less hard then the average joes. Definitely not a film that is reverberating well in middle America. Not what I expected pre review drop.

That said, the opening is solidish only if we dont look at ticket prices compared to the past / compare exclusively with the pandemic films.

If the sequel have such a complex idea maybe a miniseries is the best option.

A movie would be great if it's simpler, if they decided to introduce even more characters, expand even further the cosmic aspect etc, 6 episodes with 1 hour each would fit better.

Could be, my desire for a theatrical sequel is basically because I enjoyed the hell out of watching those visuals on a big screen, and I do think the sequel would be a more straightforward with a lot of the setup out of the way.

Wish we could get a continuation but the actor ages would be a problem

Will never not be pissed that show got axed but we got Dark Fate, a movie based on the premise of "John Connor never really mattered to the future at all actually"

While everyone is up in arms about Eternals, the disastrous performance of Spencer squeaks by unnoticed. But make no mistake, it's a disaster. The "oh but it's just an indie" excuse does not have merit. This is a movie about one of the most iconic and beloved figures of the last 50 years. It stars a name actress. Between critics swooning over it, months of  festivals/accompanying BA Oscar buzz, Neon's barrage of promoted tweets, Kristen Stewart strategically announcing her engagement on release week in a way that would have made the Kardashians proud, and a bullish near-1,000 screen count, this should have done at least $4-5M.

Another reminder that Twitter is far removed from the real world.

It's a terrible, terrible movie, even worse than Jackie. And Stewart isn't even that good in it; she looks the part but her efforts to ape Diana are desperately strained.

imo Stewart was pretty good in Spencer (good enough for a nomination, but I’d be underwhelmed if she won this year) but yea the movie itself I didn’t think was all that good.

NTTD looks to displace SC’s record for highest 5th weekend, but may fall just short with actuals:

OW — Venom LTBC 90M

2nd wknd — SC 34.7M

3rd — SC 21.7M

4th — SC 13M

5th — SC 6.1M

6th — FG 5.1M (SC has now dropped below FG’s weekends)

7th — FG 4.1M

8th — FG 2.26M

9th — Croods2 1.8M

10th — Croods2 1.8M

11th — Croods2 1.7M

12th — Croods 2 2.1M

13th — Croods 2 1.7M

Could be competitive with FG for the 6th weekend record as well given complete lack of competition. Venom and/or Bond could make a play at 8th if they hold well but I expect ghostbusters+turkey releases to do some damage.

In Australia Eternals has had the same opening weekend as Ant-Man and the Wasp although in a much less crowded market. Bond opens on Thursday.

Shang Chi holds onto second spot.

Just saw Eternals... WTF is wrong with Critics? this movie was not only good, but the best marvel film I've seen since Endgame.

It was thoughtful, heartfelt, gorgeous visuals and character focused. and yeah it didn't feel like a marvel film and I am so thankful for that, what did people expect?? Did it not have enough action for them? it had plenty imo, but gave time for the film to breath, I was actually surprised a couple times with the things that happened. really really good film. please go see it.

Yeah at this point my appreciation of each new marvel release since Endgame seems to be inversely correlated with their respective critics score :hahaha:

So if someone loved Jackie quite a bit.....

It's been a pain to avoid spoilers for No Time To Die.

What can we expect from Australia? Read somewhere in the INT thread that it has a shot of doing 30m total, is that plausible?

Did anyone really expect a Princess Diana movie from the guy that made Jackie to make any money at all?

I haven't seen Spencer but the director's detached, "a couple of days in the life of" approach to the biopic about tragic icons is clearly not for everyone.

Well Jackie had a very nice run, maybe this exhausted itself a bit with how much all the Royals stuff has been in the news since the project got greenlight, but release that at the peak of the first season of the Crown and with the old people not fearing covid, with a strong reception and awards buzz/win, could have seen it beat Jackie and reach a 50-60m WW

So because you liked the 2016 film those that grew up with the originals don’t deserve a third film? You liked 2026 better than the original?

Oh I’m not saying they shouldn’t make it for fans of the original, I’m just not interested cause I’d rather it was a sequel to the 2016 film.

I’m not big on the franchise, I just found the 2016 hysterical because of the four leads.

I like the 2016 Ghostbusters much better than the original but I get why fans were not pleased. Sony should have done a better job pandering to nostalgia, having the old cast be their mentors or something. Instead they just ignored the original ever existed. Weren't the cameos even added later in reshoots? Not a good move financially but at least it resulted in one of my favorite films.
