So sad that Ron will have had this one amazing hold...and then will start its probable fall off the cliff...although maybe it sticks more than Antlers, Soho, HK, and Spencer, so it gets another week or two...

I really wish MGM hadn't blown their wad so soon on NTTD.  It finally was having great holds and would have the space to possibly run past Thanksgiving and well into December, and them possibly just cut its nuts off starting tomorrow.

They would have gotten the same Digital release money if not more had they just held off another month.

I will never understand what the big fucking hurry is to get these films on digital where they will live forever anyways.

FWIW being released on PVOD after a few weeks doesn't seem to have hurt the legs for many movies so far (The Croods 2 made over half of its total after it had become available to watch at home). Ultimately all comes down to the individual (the question of "is it worth going out to spend $12 for a ticket or staying home to spend $20 on a 48 hour rental?"). This movie in particular would've been long gone from theaters more than a year ago and would be well into its pay TV run right now in an alternate universe anyway so it's no surprise they're just accelerating all of its release windows.

Lol no its not, 140m is around exactly what you'd expect for a franchise IP film today, I'm sure the budget for Aftermath is somewhere in that vicinity too.   This talking point that 140m was too much money for a modern remake of a classic IP in today's world is just absurd and was only put out there after it became clear it was not embraced enough to get a sequel.

Do tell then why would they give a budget that high to a movie that had no OS pull whatsoever and didn't even double it's budget WW. DOM it did well (120m+), but it was a flop OS, cause Ghostbusters doesn't have big OS appeal. They should've known better and been more careful with the budget. Also, Afterlife I imagine is cheaper.

I think in Europe Ghostbusters has a good appeal and some areas even great. You can't just make any real conclusions from the 2016 version. I see a bunch of people interested in my friend circles for this but when they and I saw trailers from the 2016 version, everyone was like wtf: this is not the Ghostbusters we're looking for...

However, the new Afterlife trailer is something that gets everyone giddy.

On the other hand, there’s a generation of kids that only know or are more familiar with the 2016 version.

People are blinkered by the internet fiasco surrounding the last film, that they forget millions of kids and families have been watching it for years.

That's a valid point and I would imagine the Stranger Things vibe there helps to counter this. And I'm still wondering if that fiasco is remembered in the minds of GA or even was much noticed there. Anecdotally, I think none of those friends I mentioned didn't probably look deeper into the 2016 Ghostbusters debacle and only registered the trailer (or if they saw it afterwards on video).

Even among kids I’m pretty sure the cultural awareness for the original is much higher than for the rejected 2016 one

I'm leaning more into this. If the movie is good and worthy of WOM, it'll fly and I don't think the 2016 version drags it much down.

I think most of you put far too much stock in the 2016 film.

The general public largely reacts like "Oh, I forgot that even existed" as they almost 100% associate Ghostbusters with the original movie.

I would bet my money on this too. If you have seen the OGs or otherwise through cultural osmosis (whatever that means...) been subjected to it, that's where 90%+ of the people knowing anything about Ghostbusters will associate it with. And then getting a dose of oxytocin in their brains, that sweet, sweet, soothing nostalgia....

About nostalgia, I think the younger generations now will value nostalgia when they get older even more than the older generations now. Life, living, the world are getting more complex and bombarded with constant stream of data and attention grabbers. And it's all changing with a faster and faster pace. One would think you would need more of those constants and safety in your life that nostalgia can offer to cope with all the change and complexity around.

Still better when NA got Frozen in Nov 2013 but Japan had it only in Mar 2014

Wow! What's the biggest Ghibli success in Japanese box office?
