The Box Office Buzz and Tracking Thread (December 2021 - July 2023)

Recommended Posts

Barbarian, counted today at 10am EST for Thursday, September 8:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 10 (2 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 20 (1 showtime)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 0 (1 showtime)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (1 showtime)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 3 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 23 (2 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 100 (2 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 156 (last Wednesday it were 100).

Comps (all counted on Monday of the release week for Thursday): The Forever Purge had 104 sold tickets,
Beast had 147 sold tickets
and The Invitation had 96 sold tickets.
Per se that's a good number for a Monday but as you can see, the sales are very uneven.

Barbarian, counted today at 10am EST for Friday, September 9:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 26 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 14 (8 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 1 (3 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (3 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 0 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 18 (4 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 11 (4 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 70 (last Wednesday 24).

Comps (all counted on Monday of the release week for Friday): Old had 150 sold tickets,
Malignant had 100 sold tickets,
The Night House had 24 sold tickets in 5 theaters,
Beast had 111 sold tickets
and The Invitation had 87 sold tickets.
That's also an ok number but the jumps over the next few days shouldn't be too small and Idk if this film has enough mainstream appeal (judging from the trailer, it could go in both directions).

Medieval had today 10 sold tickets for Thursday and 11 sold tickets for Friday (with showtimes in 4 of the 7 theaters).

The long range forecast for Bros is pretty depressing: $10-15m.

Smile is currently $15-20m, I’m hoping it breaks out. I get a feeling about this one. It’s rated R though, and an 18 here in the UK. I thought it would’ve been a draw morw with tweens and younger teens.

It would be a solid number for a comedy with zero star power, especially since legs should be fine if reviews/WOM are good. I can't imagine it cost much more than that given how almost completely low-profile the cast is.

I personally wouldn’t call $10-15m very solid for this one. It’s high profile, trailer seemed to get a great reaction. I’m hoping for a breakout considering what it represents. A $10m opening doesn’t get more of these films made unfortunately.

Twin Cities Report is back! Sorry for the hiatus, things at the job have been picking up (as a teacher, I will miss summer), but I had some time today and looked into:

Barbarian (T-2):

Day: T-2 Shows New Seats Sold Seats % Sold
Totals: 12 theaters 12 73 73 1781 4.1

Comps:

The Invitation: 2.7x ($2.1 M)

Beast: 0.94x ($870k)

The Invitation did especially poorly in the Twin Cities area, so that comparison isn't great in my opinion. I think on par with Beast makes sense for an opening. Will check in tomorrow.

I know some people might freak out and think this is breaking out, but I need to clarify I'm doing a course correction here. I didn't know until a few minutes ago that there were early access shows tomorrow night, so part of the big boost (32 of those tickets in fact) were accounting for those extra screenings I was unaware of. Still, at least this paints a better picture of what the movie's preview gross could be.

At the Regal IMAX complex near me, Jaws maintains its four daily IMAX showings this weekend. No other films are being shown in the format this weekend.

NWH is down from 6 daily showings last week to just 2 daily showings.

TGM is up from 5 to 7 daily showings with 4 of them in the (overpriced) Screen X format after NWH occupied the screen last weekend.

Both Honk and Gigi are down to a single showtime each day.

I don’t see any reason why Barbarian doesn’t easily win the weekend with TGM and BT battling it out for second place.

Barbarian, counted today at 11am EST for Thursday, September 8:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 20 (2 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 41 (2 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 2 (2 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (1 showtime)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 11 (2 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 30 (3 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 118 (3 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 222.

Up 42% since Monday.
Comps (all counted on Wednesday of the release week for Thursday): The Forever Purge had 168 sold tickets,

Beast had 202 sold tickets

and The Invitation had 176 sold tickets.
That's a quite good number. At least I don't rule out double digits at this time.

Barbarian, counted today at 11am EST for Friday, September 9:

NY (AMC Fresh Meadows 7): 34 (5 showtimes)
Miami (AMC Sunset Place 24): 36 (11 showtimes)
Grand Rapids (AMC Grand Rapids 18): 3 (5 showtimes)
Austin (AMC Lakeline 9): 0 (3 showtimes)
Tempe/Phoenix (AMC Centerpoint 11): 2 (3 showtimes)
San Francisco (AMC Metreon 16): 29 (7 showtimes)
LA (AMC Universal): 36 (7 showtimes)

Total tickets sold in 7 theaters: 140.

Up 100% since Monday.
Comps (all counted on Wednesday of the release week for Friday): Old had 262 sold tickets,

Malignant had 167 sold tickets,

The Night House had 72 sold tickets in 6 theaters,

Beast had 218 sold tickets

and The Invitation had 167 sold tickets.
Well, the number could be higher but the jump till today was very good so let's see what happens till tomorrow.

Medieval had today 28 sold tickets for Thursday and 26 sold tickets for Friday (with showtimes in 4 of the 7 theaters). Not even that bad.
Comps: Vengeance (1.8M OW) had on Monday of its release week 62 and 28 sold tickets

and Watcher (0.8M OW) 13 respectively 16.

Pearl had today after ca. 17h on sale 25 sold tickets for Thursday (with showtimes in so far only 4 theaters) and 33 sold tickets for Friday (with showtimes in 5 theaters).
Comps (all counted after ca. 24h): The Black Phone had 95 respectively 34 sold tickets,

Barbarian had 100 and 24

and Beast had 53 and 26.
Forgot the best comp: X (4.3M OW) had on Monday of its release week 50 sold tickets for Friday in 6 theaters.
Pearl's
Thursday number could be better but the Friday presales are nice so far.

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva tomorrow.
