Basically post-apocalyptic PinocchioFinch is both a meditative sci-fi drama about bracing for the inevitable and also a funny, uplifting story about hope, survival, growth, fatherhood, and that being a foot taller than Tom Hanks and made of metal has its benefits. It's not the most original sci-fi premise, and the movie sometimes struggles to balance its tone, but I think all the pieces here are rather solid and altogether make for a more compelling watch than some larger VFX films out this year that I could name.

Also, good doggy.

FYC:

Best Overlooked Feature - Didn't get a theatrical release (Universal was supposed to release it theatrically last year, but the pandemic killed those plans) nor appears to have any shot at any Oscar nominations now that the shortlists are out. I think it qualifies here.

Best Voice Performance - Caleb Landry Jones as Jeff, a bipedal automaton created by Tom Hanks's Finch to look after his dog once he's gone. Jeff is the heart of the film and Jones adds a sense of wide-eyed curiosity and youth-like spirit to his performance, despite being a tall robot unable to emote physically or speak with a natural human voice.

Best Visual Effects - Jeff is the best mo-cap of 2021 and the movie didn't even make the Oscar shortlist, wtf

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

So what if the best original song is trapped in a Disney+ show? But it’s part of the MCU. It’s referenced in a movie that they do? So like I think we should count it. I just would like to STAN “Save The City” Cause it’s a proper banger, and so I’m just wondering how we can make that happen. Please, and thank you. As always.

The song needs to be original from a qualifying movie. So while this can include movies that only released on streaming it still won’t extend to original songs for TV Shows and Miniseries.

(So Bo Burnham should be on the table if you count his Netflix special as movie. Which I personally do, pretty clear it’s a film about a comedian going insane trying to create comedy special without an audience or outside contact)

Couple of FYCs for Worst Feature

MV5BZTMyY2Q2MDctMDFlMS00MWEzLTk1NmEtNDcx

Coming 2 America - The most boring comedy of the year, this decades later sequel wastes a talented cast (and Tracey Morgan) on a dull and overlong family conflict story that isn't so much exasperating as it is just limp and unfunny. Don't be fooled whenever Wesley Snipes shows up in an admittedly amusing villain turn, he's not in it very much.

MV5BZDYyMjI1OWQtYjhmMS00MmU4LWI1N2UtNzFl

Diary of a Wimpy Kid - Despite being less than an hour long, this felt like an eternity. The book-accurate character designs are done dirty by cheap and terrible animation that would be below par for a television series (littered with clipping issues and poor frame rates) and looks even worse in film format, and the story is a lacking and mean-spirited retelling of the first book where Greg comes across as more selfish and cruel than he's ever been, and he somehow drags Rowley down with him. Disney rushed this out to capitalize on the brand, and it shows.

e380d1285d3178f452f34d2b47698a20-america

America: The Motion Picture - Presumably limited by budget (the Archer studio probably wasn't the best fit to animate this, since despite superior character animation it suffers from flat backgrounds and poor frame rates during action scenes), but even more so by grating fratboy humor and a lack of having much funny or ultimately meaningful to say. This probably isn't going to be on many people's worst ballots since it was quietly dumped on Netflix this past summer, but the cavalcade of talent both behind the scenes and in the voice cast should've produced something better than this. Diary of a Wimpy Kid was doomed from inception, while America had some promise and squandered all of it.

MV5BYjVkMmU1NGItZjM4MC00ODM1LWEyOTEtY2Y1

Malcolm & Marie - A hundred-and-five minutes of Zendaya and John David Washington arguing in circles where the point is made after the first half hour or so, but then it just keeps going. I rarely check my watch while watching a film, but while viewing Malcolm & Marie, the minutes couldn't go by any slower once the film ran out of anything new or interesting to say. The infamous scene where JDW rants about a female critic's review of his film (not sounding like director Sam Levinson is holding any grudges at all, no sir) is its own can of worms.

MV5BZTAzN2ZlZTEtOTA5ZS00MGFjLTliYWMtYTQz

Space Jam: A New Legacy - A poorly conceived advertisement for Warner Bros. IP, this is just a worse version of Ready Player One (and if you disliked RPO already, well...). Even beyond the titular basketball game in the last half, the film has no rules or consistency in place, becoming a chaotic yet staggeringly dull mess where the egregious IP exploitation somehow isn't the worst part. The Looney Tunes are hardly utilized, and when they are, it's sometimes in the worst way possible. This is my absolute worst film of the year, and HBO MAX nuking its box office hopefully spares us from more of this nonsense.

@Ezen Baklattan @The Panda I have an eligibility question. Would an anthology film comprising a collection of short films count for feature film categories?

Yeah, an anthology film is just one movie, if you're talking about something like The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

BEST HERO

Spoiler

12f4bfc7ea99921522184d495ccc9a05.jpg

Duncan Idaho - Dune

Swashbuckling, charming and Jason Momoa turning in a career best. Duncan Idaho injects Dune with a captivating energy and a sincere loyalty to those closest to him.

The-Suicide-Squad-Joel-Kinnaman-Rick-Fla

Rick Flag - The Suicide Squad

If you told me Rick Flag was going to be one of my favourites going into The Suicide Squad I would have laughed in your face. Gunn really turned the character around and injected him with the ideologies that make him a hero worthy of this list.

black-widow-florence-pugh-1200.jpg

Yelena Belova - Black Widow

Completely outshining and outperforming the rest of the cast, Florence Pugh's Yelena is easily the best addition to the MCU in the last year. Her infectious sense of fun makes her magnetic anytime she's on screen

Arcane-Season-2-announced.jpg

Vi - Arcane

Hardened by life, Vi is probably the most badass but also imperfect character on this list. With a number of jaw dropping fight scenes up her sleeve, it’s Vi’s emotional drive to reconnect with her sister Powder that will tug on your heart.

free-guy-trailer-ryan-reynolds-rogue-npc

Guy - Free Guy

While the movie was just pretty good. I cannot deny that I was won over by the absolute innocent sincerity of Ryan Reynolds’ Guy as he sets to not just be the the good guy but the GREAT guy and save his little slice of home that he’s come to love.

Spoiler

Andrew_Garfield_Spider_Man_No_Way_Home.p

Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) - Spider-Man: No Way Home

Let’s be honest Andrew Garfield absolutely stole the show and provides the most emotionally carthatic scene in the film. His arrival gives the film a kick up the ass as he continues to pop off the screen.

data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAPABAP///wAAACH5BAEKAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAICRAEAOw==

No-Time-to-Die-2192x1233.jpg

James Bond - No Time to Die

Craigs final outing is a worthy one. He finds new facets to the character playing him as aloof and playful in a way he hasn’t tapped into before. Backed by an extremely personal motivation that is fresh for Bond and 100% works.

l-intro-1633045032.jpg

Kate Bishop - Hawkeye

Hailee Steinfeld is and always has been a movie star. Her Kate Bishop exudes the same effortless charm and haphazard energy that she consistently excels at. Now get her into the films where she belongs Marvel.

Sheriff-Hassan-speaks-at-his-desk-in-his

Sherrif Hassan - Midnight Mass

Already on the back foot, Sherrif Hassan is surrounded by those who look at him different and are quick to judge. Although he’s slow to get there as the towns cult like behaviour continues to escalate he continues to provide a voice of reason and do what is right.

Invincible-Robert-Kirkman.jpg?fit=1200,6

Mark Grayson - Invincible

No matter how beaten down, or how broken he gets Mark continues to persist in his efforts to be a hero and live up to his Dad’s example. He exudes the same qualities as Spider-Man as he struggles to balance his personal and superhero life, always choosing the latter.

MV5BMjMxNTdiNWMtOWY0My00MjM4LTkwNzMtOGI0

A highly polarizing film, but given its low box office and seemingly low Oscar chances (GoldDerby predicts an outside chance at cinematography, maybe production design, and not much else), I think it could use a FYC post. The Green Knight, as a new take on Arthurian legend, is a story about bravery as much as it is about cowardice, the journey of one man whose desperate craving for honor and glory causes him to make a reckless decision that puts him on the path of an inevitable fate, but one he must fulfill for it is what an honorable knight would do. Dev Patel's Sir Gawain's quest takes him across strange lands with even stranger encounters, pushing him to his physical and emotional limits, and leading him to ask if whether he should stay the course to preserve his integrity and good spirit, or seek of a way out of his obligations to escape his fate.

FYC:

Best Feature

Best Overlooked Feature - Grossed less than $19m worldwide, and as said earlier, unlikely to get much awards recognition.

Best Actor - Dev Patel as Sir Gawain, who carries this film to the bitter end. With films like Lion and The Personal History of David Copperfield, Patel has been slowly building his acting renaissance after initially breaking out with Slumdog Millionaire, and his performance here is the most compelling he's been yet, conveying youthful innocence; hotheaded arrogance; mortal fright; a slow descent into darkness; and in the film's closing moments, a gained sense of maturity, wisdom, and acceptance, all impeccably performed even in the long stretches of the film where he has no other human to interact with.

Best Supporting Actress - Alicia Vikander as Essel and The Lady. Vikander plays two roles in this film, first as Gawain's starry-eyed lover Essel waiting for him back home, and later as a seductive woman who offers Gawain a way out in exchange of Gawain accepting her advances.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Scene -

Spoiler

The entire ending vision, including the lead-up (Gawain hesitating when the Green Knight repeatedly tries to off his head, which is a very tense scene on its own) and the twist in the film's closing moments.

Bonus FYC for a certain, uh... sticky encounter, if you know what I mean

Best Cinematography

Best Editing

Best Costume Design

Best Production Design

Best Hair and Makeup

Gotta say. I know they technically qualify or whatever but I think things like Pig or Green Knight would be silly to nominate for overlooked features. Those were widely discussed features among thisn community and it would seem silly to label them as overlooked imo.
