Gotta say. I know they technically qualify or whatever but I think things like Pig or Green Knight would be silly to nominate for overlooked features. Those were widely discussed features among thisn community and it would seem silly to label them as overlooked imo.

I will agree that it’s harder to quantify Overlooked these past two years given BO is horrid for most films. Hard criteria is remaining the same, but it’s worth considering what fits the spirit of the category (and that may be interpreted differently by different members), but that’s left up to each person to decide.

The Green Knight was one of the most talked about indie films of the year; if it qualifies for overlooked feature, then perhaps the issue is with how broad that category covers since it’s fairly obvious it should never qualify for it lol

I just went by what’s defined in the ruleset. Wether people want to vote for it or not should be up to them imo 🤷‍♂️

Yes, in general the categories are broadly defined so people can vote for what they want. You can vote for TGK in overlooked if you’d like.

I was saying personally, even though it technically qualifies, it does not seem to fit the spirit of the category the same way that some other stuff people have recommended do.

Blanks had mentioned Night of the Kings, something barely talked about with no awards or BO pulse. If you compare that to the Green Knight which was all over film discourse they seem starkly different in how overlooked they are.

But again, it’s a personal judgement call.

I mean, if we’re going to argue the ’spirit of the category’, then it seems counteractive to me to have the current definition be so broad if even films that do check all the boxes put forward then aren’t going to be deemed to be in the ’spirit’ of it. In that case, I’d maybe add an additional qualifier like ”less than X views on letterboxd” so you have the quantifiable data but avoid the interpretation gap. Something like sub-75k views (or lower, if people prefer) would still allow for a broad range of films that most people can pick at least a couple out of that they’ve seen (and make streaming releases less of a grey area, which I admittedly struggled a bit with while doing my ballot).

Our current criteria was set pre-pandemic, so we could revisit the rules given 25m DOM at the BO might be seen as fairly successful (or you have mainstream highly talked about streaming only releases). I’m happy to take recommendations if people have a set of criteria that better fits the time.

The hard part is coming up with a stricter criteria that works appropriately.

My general philosophy whenever doing awards or lists is to let people decide for themselves where I can, and enough people vote for it so be it. So currently leaving it the same for TGK. I was just stating my personal case of why I don’t view it as overlooked, others are free to view it and vote differently (I am of course not enforcing my personal preferences about things)

So my best actor and actress list is weak any suggestions on what I should watch?

Already seen Power of the Dog and Tick, Tick, Boom! which are the best acting I've seen so far from the films I've seen I'd say. I had to consider Scarlett Johansson in Black Widow in my best actress category (Who is good for sure, but not Oscar level by any means)

Actress is definitely weaker than other years, and I had the same problem finding good actress nominees. If you haven't seen Passing yet, Tessa Thompson is very good in it even though Ruth Negga steals the film. Alana Haim is also fantastic in Licorice Pizza. For actor, I think Adam Driver in Annette and Simon Rex in Red Rocket are great choices.

Jodie Comer, The Last Duel

Alana Haim, Licorice Pizza

Rebecca Hall, The Night House

Vicky Krieps, Bergman Island/Old

Michelle Pfeiffer, French Exit

Hard disagree for me; Mass feels like a Trial of the Chicago 7 situation to me where there’s no clear “lead” in the film even though they’re in the film for a long time; they all share the film and support each other. Plus Bleecker Street’s campaigning it that way. So people can disagree but I’m pushing them supporting!

Sorry think this is really stupid. They're all on screen for basically the entire film they are all four leads

I just simply disagree with the idea of equating screen time to ‘lead’ or ‘supporting’ when it comes to broad ensemble pieces such as Mass and Trial of the Chicago 7. And as someone who follows the award circuit I disagree personally with going against the groundwork laid by other awards bodies. I know that all four actors take up the entire film but it’d be a stretch to say that any of them lead the film just because of how long they’re on screen. I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on this one.

YES

Guy did such an amazing job playing the ultimate douchebag. A pity the film was lost in the shuffle (or I guess maybe it's a good thing considering all the disc horse over Licorice Pizza)
