BO Germany/Austria: Dune 2 fine 2nd weekend

Recommended Posts

final estimates have Bond at 1,1mil admissions now ... and better yet, Dune at nearly 150k with only a 43% drop, much better than I feared!

1.1m is a bit lower than I expected, I recall Spectre has higher opening and 1.1m was almost the 2nd weekend of Spectre.

Theaters are still operation under pandemic-rules though. They have only limited capacity available, and, depending on the area, you either have to wear a mask even at your seat, or, at least everytime you are not in your seat. You also need to be vaccinated or have a negative test from that day.

Some places also allow to drop all further rules (so no mask, no limited capacity) if you only allow vaccinated people into the theater. But that is only available in some states, and it is entirely optional for the theaters whether they allow only vaccinatied or vaccinated + tested people.

But I thought Sunday is a public holiday in Germany right? Do you all get a replacement holiday on Mon?

No, we don't have replacement days here. If a holiday falls on a weekend you don't get anything out of it, unless you happen to be one of those who work on the weekend. This year it is particularly pronounced, because basically all holidays linked to a date fall on the weekend. In my state, out of the six holidays that are bound to a date instead of a weekday, five fell on the weekend, only January 1st didn't. That left just the four days that are linked to a weekday instead (Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day and Pentecost), and they all happen in the first half of the year.

That is brutal, how is no one complain about this holiday stealing scheme?

well, Germany (especially Bavaria) and Austria are among the countries with most holidays anyway so it's not that big of a theme, but the theme arises now and then in public discussion (union-driven, mostly, and quickly dismissed, usually)

But losing a holiday to calendar effect, I can't believe in a more socialist country like in Germany, this is overlooked. Normally a replacement holiday for PH falls on Sunday is a practice for many countries out there. Some private enterprise even  give a half-day off on friday for PH falls on Saturday.

I was going to say:

Aside of public holiday In Germany the minimum holiday/vacation entitlement is 24 working days a year.

It is impossible for anything regarding holiday calendar to ever be brutal....... that sound like worst case scenario you have at least 6 full week a year.......

This year is a mean exception because almost all legal holidays were on a weekend. But that will become better in the next years ;)

The weather will help all movies in the next days because it's predicted to become rainy (almost) everywhere. The next weekend should be nicer weather-wise but then it's said to be mixed at best again.

I really wouldn't call anything we have "more socialist". There is very little socialist about anything in Germany, or Europe for that matter ;)

Replacement days are common, but not exactly the standard either. Less than half of all countries have it, though I couldn't tell you how the share looks in the western world.

As mentioned above, Germany has a minimum of 20 vacation days per year (well, 20 weekdays or 24 "Werktage", which includes Saturday), and the norm is above that, so holidays have a bit of a different character here and aren't as necessary as for example in the US. Whenever there is a debate about this matter, the argument in favour is that you shouldn't lose a day of rest due to a holiday falling on a weekend, while the argument against it is that holidays are generally meant to allow someone to celebrate a specific event, not to act as a replacement for vacation time.

Many companies do treat Christmas eve and New Year's eve as half a holiday, so in many places you only need to use up half a day of vacation for each of them. The evening of the 24th is the most important part of christmas in Germany, so that's rather conveniant.

Quite frankly, I'd care more about getting an equal amount of holidays for everyone over getting a replacement day. Right now some states have quite a few more holidays than others.

Good opening on the upper end of expectations for No Time To Die - with some restrictions still in power, it was a given that it wouldn't reach the heights of prior Bond openings but that's a very satisfying start. Dune held better than expected, a 38% drop despite losing all big screens and most good timeslots must be considered excellent.

Next weekend: Again, distributors kept anything important away from 007, so holdovers will have the market to themselves (more or less) - the question is if No Time To Die can make up for the reduced OW by a better hold. Spectre had an OW of 1,68mil and dropped 22% to 1,31mil in weekend #2, that's still higher Than No Time To Die's OW. So, if people just postponed their shows because of restrictions, we might see a near-flat number - if it does suffer a significant drop, that would make it impossible to reach the usual Bond standards. (Spectre did nearly 7,1mil in its day; Skyfall topped out at more than 7,8mil)

Almost no changes in the second trend, unfortunately a little bit in the wrong direction:

#1 NTTD 900k
#2 Dune 125k/1.25M total admissions including Sunday
#3 Die Pfefferkörner 35k
#4 SC 32.5k
#5 Paw Patrol 22.5k

The sunny weather on Saturday and Sunday is mostly to blame that NTTD doesn't have an (even) better hold. By contrast the weekdays were pretty grey which probably helped the movies, e.g. Dune must have had ca. 65k admissions from Monday to Wednesday (no Bond total numbers reported so far).
