BO Germany/Austria: Dune 2 fine 2nd weekend

Recommended Posts

2nd Trend:

Geheimnis 725k (-22%/-30%)

Joker 225k (-43%)

Zombieland2 150k

Maleficent2 90k (-49%)

Addams Family 70k (-52%)

Terminator 55k (-53%)

So Joker was over predicted a bit as was Geheimnis, none the less, now Joker is exactly at where I thought it would need to be for 4M (even though I had hopes for a little higher weekend), so I still think it will get to 4M but I doubt much past that.

Geheimnis with that 2nd weekend still barely would have the 2nd biggest 2nd weekend this year.

How are pre-sales looking for TROS?

Depends, but overall I'd say pretty good. Haven't taken a detailed look though and haven't counted at any cinema, mostly because I have no comps out that far, though if I find the time I most likely will just compare it to final sales.

3rd trend is rather awful:

Geheimnis: 675k (-27%)

Joker: 195k (-51%)

Recep Ivedik 6: 140k

Zombieland: 130k

Maleficent: 75k (-57% ouch)

Addams Family: 70k (-52%)

Dark Fate: 50k (-57%)

Lara: 37.5k

Midway: 35k

IwnniNY: 32.5k (-57%)

Parasite: 27.5k (-40%)

Shaun: 25k (-63%)

Mhh, makes getting much past 4M harder for both.

Ok weekend but with steeper drops than expected. At this rate, Joker might yet miss the 4mil total mark (still, what a success!).

Next weekend: The Irishman, Last Christmas, Ford vs Ferrari, Booksmart, Black And Blue, My Zoe, plus some more - a LOT of releases but #1 should be very very safe with the domestic comedy. Among openers, the christmas comedy is probably the biggest hope for a new #2.

The Thursday estimates from InsideKino see another great drop for the local Geheimnis (66k, -21% from LW estimates) and again a rather mediocre hold for Joker (16k, -38% from LW estimates).

Combined with a bit better numbers from the other report Geheimnis should get to 60k+ (-20% from LW Thursday actual) and maybe 550k WE (applying same IM as LW). Joker would indeed reach around 16k and 125k WE.

As for Geheimnis that would be great, it just needs 565k+ for the best 3rd WE of the year. But I hope Joker might do more than that...

Nive overall weekend, no big openers but beautiful holds and even increases for family releases. The domestic comedy scored the highest 3rd weekend of the year, perfect WOM obviously.

Next weekend: The big opener is Frozen2, presales look a bit lackluster but that's perfectly normal for family fare. #1 should be no problem but can it get to 1mil OW? With a target demo that young, frontloadedness will be a smaller factor than with other releases - otoh you'd be hard pressed to spot a girl NOT wearing and/or using some Frozen merchandise, this must be the most-merchandised title in recent history. However it opens, this will work its way up the 2019 charts throughout December …

A completely different audience gets targeted by Doctor Sleep which might become #2 (especially as it will eat into Joker's demo …)

Everything less than 1M would be disappointing to me (especially since it's 5-day). But I hope for 4-day 1M+...

As for Doctor Sleep: It won't become 2nd - Geheimnis is still very strong. The best it might hope for is 3rd, and seeing the results in other countries even that isn't safe... Also it opens in only 330 theaters.

I know, that I had planned and I think even wrote it, to count Frozen 2, but I didn't have the time to count, so here is a quick count for the 3 normal cinemas  - the difference between CinemaxX and Cinestar in Bremen is kinda worrying.

But Wednesday should be the second weakest day of the opening weekend (tomorrow should be the weakest)

MarkG from InsideKino wrote that first numbers indicate the OD for Frozen2 could top TLK (with 70% of the country having holiday compared to 20% now). TLK opened to 208k so we should have 200k+.

Top OD 2019:

A:EG 462k

TLK 208k

F2 200k+

Geheimnis 165k (after 120k previews)

Joker 140k (after 100k previews)

CM 125k

IT2 100k (after 40k previews)

200k sounds really good, who had holiday apart from Saxony though?

Like it should have a shot at a 1M 4-day opening and hopefully a total close to the first.
